Albert Edward Oaten was born in the Melbourne suburb of Collingwood in 1888, the son of Charles Henry Oaten and Kate Carroll.
His mother died on October 6th 1901. Albert was aged 13 when this happened. After the death of their mother Lydia, Kate and Margaret went to live with the nuns in an Abbotsford convent (most likely Sisters of the Good Shepard) in about 1901. Their brothers went to a catholic boys home in South Melbourne (probably St. Vincents de Paul), whilst the youngest daughter Alice initially went to live with neighbours until she was four. She was then made a ward of the state at Royal Park and lost track of her family until she was seventeen. She became aware of her family when she was sent a cheque. Another story has it that Albert was born Church of England, but was brought up Methodist by the Battle family.
In his adulthood Albert made a living as a boot-last maker. This was apparently with Raymond's Boot factory. He resided at 27 Reilly street in Collingwood in November 1909.
He married Violet Barbara Cheyne at the congregational church at 101 Gore street on November 24th 1909 in the Melbourne suburb of Fitzroy at 21 years of age.
He resided at 15 Coleman street, in the Melbourne suburb of North Fitzroy in April 1919. Albert died on May 2nd 1919 in Campbellfield, Victoria, at 30 years of age of pneumonic influenza. It was said by his daughter that we was helping the medical profession at the time during this world-wide epidemic. His body was interred at Coburg cemetary on May 3rd 1919 in the Melbourne suburb of Coburg.
Albert Edward Oaten and Violet Barbara Cheyne had the following children:
Violet Agnette Oaten.
Mavis Lily Oaten.
Albert Robert Oaten was born in the Melbourne suburb of Clifton Hill in 1916. Albert died in 1917 in the Melbourne suburb of Carlton, at 1 year of age.
Charles Henry Oaten.
