Violet Barbara Cheyne was born in North Melbourne, Victoria on April 11th 1888. Her mother died in 1901. Violet was aged 13 when this happened. Tragedy struck again for the Cheyne children with the death of their brother Arthur at the age of nineteen in 1907, only six years after the death of their mother.
She married Albert Edward Oaten at 101 Gore st. on November 24th 1909 in the Melbourne suburb of Fitzroy at 21 years of age. At this time her occupation was given as confectioner.
Violet, at 22 years of age and Albert, at 21 years of age became the parents of Violet Agnette Oaten on June 18th 1910 in Melbourne, Victoria. She was the first of five children to be born to them. Violet, as Albert Edward Oaten's wife, resided with him at 15 Coleman street, in the Melbourne suburb of North Fitzroy in April 1919. Violet was widowed at 31 years of age by the death of her husband Albert in 1919. He was stricken as part of the world wide influenza epidemic.
She remarried Charles Gostray circa 1940. Violet died in September 1962 in the Melbourne suburb of Northcote, at 74 years of age.

Albert Robert Oaten was born in the Melbourne suburb of Clifton Hill in 1916. Albert died in 1917 in the Melbourne suburb of Carlton, at 1 year of age.
