THE CALDWELL FAMILY

The name Caldwell comes from the "Cauldwell" estate in Scotland, known for its cold wells.

The earliest records of the Caldwells relate to three brothers: John , Alexander, and Oliver, born in Toulon, France. They were seamen on the Mediterranean in the 14th century and settled at Mt. Arid. Having earned the enmity of Francis I, they fled France and settled in Scotland. They purchased the estate of a bishop named Douglass near Tolney, Frith. James I granted permission for the three brothers to have the estate of "Cauldwell" on the condition that they should each send a son, with 20 men of sound limbs, to aid in the wars of the king. A cup has been preserved as a family heirloom. It depicts a chieftain and 20 mounted men, all armed, and a man drawing water from a well, with the words underneath, "Alexander of Cauldwell". There is also a fire burning on a hill, over the words "Mount Arid", and a vessel surrounded by high waves.

At least three distinct branches of the family emigrated to America at different times:
First, John Caldwell of Ireland and his family landed at Newcastle, DE on 10 Dec 1727.
Second, James Caldwell of County Tyrone, Ireland came in 1769 and settled in VA. His brother John settled in VA and his brother David settled in SC.
Third, John Caldwell of Harmony Hill, near County Ballymony, Ireland came with his family in 1798 and 1800. They settled near Salisbury Mills, Orange County, NJ, except the youngest son who settled in Charleston, SC. John's brother James settled in Philadelphia and his brother Richard settled in Baltimore.
