Coffee smells good, what's it taste like?
Jennifer Maree DeToy
When I reflect upon my father, I first and foremost see a devoted
family man. He is a competent and loving father who is loyal to his kin. If any
one were in need of him, he would be there. He has been there—for each and every
one of us—again and again.
His children were raised to be honest, moral,
respectful, hard working, and smart. We were taught to love our country and our
God. We were raised to be good kids. I often wonder "How did Dad know what to
do?" "Why did he make so many right choices?" "What did he have?" The answer to
many of those questions, of course, is Mom. Together they raised their seven
children in a manner rarely seen. Mom and Dad just seemed to know how. I never
saw them argue. I could never play one against the other in order to get my way.
From my perspective, they were always a team. Always supportive of each other.
Always doing the right thing.
Now that I am an adult, my father is the one I
call to discuss finances, taxes, government, society, and life. I seek his
advice when considering purchasing, oh, just about anything. He knows what's
best. He's had a lot of experience. He's smart.
I learn how to be a good
person, a good citizen, a good friend, by talking with my father about his
life—by asking what he did today. I know that through him I will learn how to
live a worthy life.
