"Because so many of the Johnstone-Sloan forebears came to America from Scotland, via Ireland, a general note on the breed is in order. Let it be said first that a better name for them might be Ulster Scots, for they were indeed Scots who lived in Northern Ireland (Ulster) for several generations and then moved on, with comparatively few Irish genes added to their heritage. They did not come to America with banners waving and pipes a-skirling. They came mainly in rags and squalor -- landless peasants mostly, many of them illiterate. In Pennsylvania, the target of the vast majority of them, they 'were understood to be a tolerated class, exempt from quitrents by an ordinance of 1720 in consideration of their being a frontier people."
(Don Johnstone 1982)
