This speciman of Button Bush grows on our lake front. While not a particular landscape favorite, I find it interesting and it puts out seed for birds. The little white globes of puff are kind of pretty, with with their little yellow tips. Somewhat like a starburst, but perfect in shape.!
Poke grows wild here in the Southern areas and for many folks, a welcome treat in the spring Also see Pokeweed You will see that it is a rather controversial plant.....but I like it .. I feel fortunate to have a few plants available in the spring.
Ground Ivy (Glechoma hederacea)
AKA Gil-O'er-the-ground and Ale Hoof This little plant loves the shade and will not tolerate hot sun. It makes a pretty ground cover in the shady areas, but pretty much goes dormant in the winter. It has a square stem and a not too unpleasant scent and flavor, almost like camphor. [12 Nov 1999, Henriette varified that it is of the Labiatae family.] 11 Nov 1999 Henriette Kress says it is Glechoma hederacea, ground ivy.'
Thanks again, Henriette.I suppose I am in trouble with my memory. I studied this little plant back long before Aug of 1996 and had been using it in spring salads after I quit fighting it. I remember the name Ale Hoof and Gill-o'er-the-ground, especially the Gill..etc, as I had discovered it about the same time as I did the Cleavers. Used them, the cleavers, oxalis, chickweed, and some dandelion added to bib lettus and tomato/onion salad. Also see Alehoof on the herb page for more information.
