About Carmine Serino |
(From TekWeek, Oct. 30, 1998)
The United Kingdom. Finland. Hong Kong. Australia. Germany. Field offices across the United States. No -- these are not the places to find Carmine Serino. He's back in Wilsonville recovering from his many trips helping the PR folks introduce Tektronix' four new printers. Instead -- these are just some of the places from which Tektronix employees sent their "Where's Carmine?" contest entries.
The winning entry was drawn at random. The winner is Ron Henricksen, MBD, who will receive $100. Ron found Carmine at www.tek.com/Color_Printers/products/840/840pr.htm
Thanks to everyone for entering. And congratulations to our winner!

Carmine Serino is chalking up more miles than he ever thought possible for a hardware support engineer. That's because this summer, Carmine found himself in a surprising new role -- traveling with the public relations team to support new products in a series of press tours spanning both coasts.
He's been on the road since mid-August, and more travel is on the horizon. So far, Carmine has been to New York City, Boston, Washington D.C., San Francisco, and Florida -- sometimes more than once.
"My goal is to earn a frequent flyer airline ticket out of this," quipped Carmine. "And actually, it got to be fun living out of a suitcase."
His unusual assignment came about when the public relations team asked Jim Tiano, Customer Support Engineering manager, for on-the-road help. Jim pegged Carmine for the job because he had in-depth technical knowledge of all four new printers through his involvement with NPI teams across the organization.
Press tours take place long before "ship-ready" units are available, yet the pre-release printers must perform flawlessly, explained Erin Isselmann, public relations specialist for CPID (Color Printer & Imaging Division). The challenge is harrowing enough with one new product, but four gave cause for worry.
"New color printers are shooting targets," said Erin. "It's the journalist's job to be critical, so we needed someone with us who could demonstrate each printer to the best advantage, with no failures. With his extensive knowledge of all four products, Carmine was invaluable to the success of the tour."
The success of the tours, much like the products themselves, resulted from outstanding cooperation among different entities within CPID, including engineering, marketing, manufacturing and support, said Carmine.
Meanwhile, Carmine's gearing up for the next tour...

Tektronix Inc. takes competition to heart. To come up with the best entry for the Comdex '97 Micrografx chili cook-off, Tek held an internal competition within its color printer division, offering an all expenses paid trip to Las Vegas to the employee who whipped up the best recipe. The winner, Carmine Serino and his Carmine's Tour de Italia chili, didn't take first prize at the Micrografx party, but it made the competition break out in a sweat.

Carmine Serino is exceedingly humble about his chili recipe that's representing Tektronix at this week's Comdex show in Las Vegas. His chili won first place at the recent chili cook-off sponsored by CPID (Color Printing and Imaging Division) in Building 63's cafeteria.
"I read about the contest and decided I'd enter it," Carmine says, "so I sat here at my terminal and made up the recipe. I had a pretty good idea of what could go into it and I wanted to mix in some of my heritage, but beyond that, it's nothing special."
"I guess it actually came together and didn't kill anybody," he jokes.
Tektronix is entering Carmine's recipe in the annual Micrografx "Chili for Children" contest, one of the major events at Comdex.
Carmine, who's Italian, is a support engineer in CPID's Service Support group. He admits to a certain fondness for cooking -- "I do enjoy it" -- which is pretty apparent from his ability to dream up the winning recipe while sitting at his workstation.
We thank Carmine for sharing it with us.

Brown the ground meat over medium heat. Add the garlic, oregano, parsley, garlic powder, cumin, chili powder, peppers. Stir fry for a few mintues until vegetables are partially cooked. Add the tomato sauce, beans, olives and chilis. Lower heat to a simmer. Simmer for about 10 minutes.
