Virgil filed a homestead claim for a section 9 miles west of Arthur and made his home there. The family history article written by his sister Ruth says, ``Virgil led a very interesting life, he was an excellent shot with a rifle, a pilot, and a very successful rancher. Virgil lived on the ranch and was involved in the management until his death in 1977.''

Virgil had a large ranch in Arthur County, growing it to nearly 18 sections. He took great pride in his Hereford cattle operation.
