Ellen moved to Stafford Co., Kansas for a while, before moving onto Nebraska. Her brother John also settled in Stafford Co., Kansas, and I think her sister Maggie lived there at one time.

Her descendents contributed their family history to a McPherson County, Nebraska history book, and it is from this book that a lot of the details on this family are known.

Ellen and John met in Kansas, married back in Iowa, then lived on John's homestead near St. John, Kansas for 14 years. In 1900, they moved to a farm near Paris, Illinois. Then in 1908, they moved to a homestead in what became Arthur County, Nebraska, in the Sand Hills region of western Nebraska.

John took a trip to Kansas City and purchased lumber from the World's Fair that was being dismantled there, for use in building their house in Nebraska. The family rented a rail car to ship all their goods from Illinois to Nebraska. Their son Homer came along with the lumber, then John and sons Virgil and Alva came in the rail car with all their possessions. The rest of the family came by train a little later. They unloaded from the train in Paxton, Nebraska, then moved their lumber and goods the final 25 miles to their homestead by wagon. Ellen's sister Margaret accompanied the family to the new homestead.

The family supplemented their farm income with a molasses cane mill they had brought from Illinois, and also started a broom making business, raising their own broom corn, too. Virgil was the main broom maker and they sold the brooms in different towns, even as far away as Cheyenne, Wyoming.

Ellen had joined the Christian Church while a young girl.
