Ruth taught school in various rural schools of Arthur County between 1919 and 1925. After she and Lewis married, they lived on his ranch 14 miles northwest of Arthur, initially in a four-room sod house there. A few years after Lewis' death, in 1947, Ruth and the children moved to another farm, but returned to their own ranch in January of 1949. Ruth then ran the ranch with the help of the children and hired help. After John returned from college in 1960, he returned to help manage the ranch. Ruth continued to live on the ranch.
