Andrew immigrated to America at age 22 with his father. He spent a few years in North English area, but then went back to Scotland.

According to his niece Ida Scott Medlin, Andrew came to America with the rest of the family, but he ``couldn't live here because of his health so he went back to Scotland.''

According to Helen Wiggins (a Gilchrist relative), Andrew left because he didn't like Iowa. Reeva (Gilchrist) Wyant told Lyman Morrison that she had heard that Andrew had asthma and thought he lived until about 1920.

Andrew's obituary mentions that the is survived by a grandchild, but doesn't give any name.
