Sis and William celebrated their 50th wedding anniversary a few months before she died.
Her sister Mary Ferne recalled the following memories in 1997:
Hattie ``Sis'' took over when my mother died when I was 6 months old. Bill worked for Dad and he and Sis stayed at home and took care of us until I was 8 or 9. Raymond and I always called Bill ``Daddy Bill'' and that was a name that followed him for the rest of his life. He spent a lot of time with us. He taught us to feed birds and squirrels and to enjoy nature. When they moved away from our farm, Raymond and I really missed them. We spent lots of weekends up there. Sis was the only mother figure we knew as little kids. She worked very hard all her life.
