William Watt came to Preble Co., Ohio in 1815. He bought lot 102 in the town of Eaton on April 13, 1815 for $800.

Also in 1815, he opened a wool-carding factory in Eaton, ``and began wool carding by hose-power machinery. His shop was located on the south side of Main street, on what is now known as the Anderson Jones property.''

Some time before that, the Watt family lived in NC since that is where his daughter Unity was born. The population of Eaton was only 255 in 1820.

On July 23, 1832, William sold his wool-carding business to Robert Adams of Eaton for $500. Included in the sale was: ``lot 173 with buildings, 2 carding machine, 1 picker.''

William and Rebecca sold land to their sons Joseph and Alexander in the 1820s.

The names of William's children, some of their spouses, and some grandchildren are known from court records settling his estate after he died. The first such record identified so far was filed August 12, 1839. Here is the published record: 9-12-1839 - Henry Monfort and Rebecca WATT executors of William WATT, dec'd, vs. Sarah HILL and John HILL, et al. Petition to complete real contract. Filed 8-12-1839. Land part NW 1/4, Section 26, Township 8, Range 2, being 50 acres which was contracted to Barbara Cailes who on 1-3-1838 assigned her interet to Jacob Cailes. Heirs: Sara late Watt wife of John Hill; Maria late Watt wife of Daniel McCoy; Anna late Watt, wife of Samuel McClure; Unity late Watt wife of Alexander Scott; Margaret S. late Watt, wife of John Scott; all of Indiana; William Watt of Darke Co., Ohio; Alexander Watt of Preble C.; Jane late Watt, wife of Jesse Curtis of Preble Co.; Joseph Watt, dec'd, his children--Levi, Hezekiah R., Nancy Jane, Margaret E., Eli and Henry M. Watt all of Preble Co., the last five being minors. (200)

According to information I received from Melvin Silvara of Oroville, California, William Watt was born in 1757 in Ireland. According to his information, ``William arrived in Charleston, SC at age 11 in 1767 on the ship Earl of Hillsborough. The ship landed in Charleston SC on 8 Feb. 1767. He was in Iredell Cty. NC. where he married Rebeckah ? and raised a family.'' The ship passenger list shows the following family: Isabel Watt, age 50, John Watt age 36, Jane Watt age 39, William Watt age 28, William Watt age 11, Christopher Watt age 8, John Watt age 4, and Izabell Watt age 2. From this, it appears that the grandmother Isabel came with her sons John and William, John's wife Jane, and John and Jane's children.

Mel Silvara also supplied names and information about William's parents and grandparents, which is included here. I do not know exactly how the connection was established between this William in Ohio and that information. Mel mentioned getting all these facts from another family researcher on his line back in Silvara, Pennsylvania. Thus, I have no idea of how reliable this data is or what the original sources were, as of 1998.

Some census evidence contradicts that immigration story, however. The 1880 US census includes a column indicating the father's birth place. I don't know of any of William's children still surviving in 1880, but at least three children of William's son Alexander have been found in the census. Their census entries show the birthplace for their father, Alexander. David P. Watt's and Elizabeth (Watt) Hawley's 1880 census entries give Ireland for their father's birthplace, and John B. Watt's gives the Atlantic Ocean. Since Alexander is thought to have been born in 1789, those two census entries imply the family immigrated right around then. William's next youngest son, Joseph, was born in North Carolina, according to the 1880 census for Joseph's sons, Levi and Hezekiah.
