Janet is rather an interesting character. She had 4 illegitimate children
in Scotland by 3 or 4 different men. According to her 1900 census
entry, she immigrated in 1861, however her youngest son Andrew Philip(s)
came over in 1870 with Janet's brother Peter and his family.
Janet Bell immigrated to the US from Scotland in April of 1861 with her
father, brother, and three of Janet's children.
She came to Iowa and joined the Church of Christ, also in 1861.
The first list of members of the North English Christian Church
which was made in February 1864 shows Janette Gilchrist, age 31
as a charter member.
After her marriage to A.J. Simmons, she joined the German Baptist
Brethren church, but she was buried from the Church of Christ.
Janet Bell was Andrew Simmons' wife for over 30 years, but
she is buried near her relatives in North English while he's
buried with his first wife Salinda and some of their children.
Janet (also spelled Janette) served as a midwife in Iowa Co.
Her name was listed in the ``attending physician'' column on at
least 20 births.
