Andrew Phillips immigrated to the US with his uncle Peter Gilchrist in 1870.
Keokuk County, Iowa marriage records list the marriage of Philipps, A.R., age 24, and Simmons, Martha Ann in 1878, which I believe is this Andrew in that marriage record, but it is hard to prove. Andrew's descendents give his wife's name as Frances Jane Ekes, (who went by Jane) but we haven't yet found a marriage record for them. By the 1885 census, Andrew and Jane are married and have a son Andrew W. So one of several things might be the case here:
A great-grandchild, Chris Dunning, of Andrew filled in the information about the rest of Andrew's life, death, and his descendents. According to Chris, ``Andrew Rome Phillips was a big strapping Scot with a real brogue and a joshing but shy way. Jane, on the other hand, was a headstrong woman who changed men more often than her petticoat. The family line is that no one understood what Andrew saw in her, yet she stayed with him for many years, and didn't remarry until he died. ''
Around 1900, Andrew and his family moved to North Dakota. Then a year or two later, they moved to a homestead near Brant, Alberta, where Andrew died.
There was a relatively large group of people from the North English, Iowa area who moved to York, North Dakota in the early 1900s. Maybe Andrew was part of this group? The Bone family (one of which married Andrew's daughter Wilda) also lived around York, ND before moving to Alberta.
Andrew's great-granddaughter Chris said that her father, the son of Andrew's daughter Wilda, said that Andrew Phillips may have remarried. Her dad often heard his mother (Wilda) and grandmother (Jane) mention family members with the name Simmons, and he also remembers his aunt, his mother, and his uncle Wes talking about someone with the given name Martha when he was a kid.
No disrespect intended, but since we don't know exactly when Andrew and Jane married, it's possible that Martha Ann may have been Andrew Wesley's mother, also.
