Thomas spent most of his early life in Keokuk County, except for 6 months that he was in California sometime prior to 1903. He farmed until 1893, when he moved to Webster opened a general store which carried dry goods, groceries, etc. He also kept farming and stock raising in addition to running the store and had a 440 acre farm in 1903. He was a supporter of the Republican party.

After their children were grown, Thomas and Eva began spending their winters in California. About 3 years before she died, Eva's health began to fail, and from then on they stayed in Iowa.

I don't know when he moved to Long Beach for good. His obituary said, ``He was married to Deane Wall in 1939 and they made their home in Long Beach, California.'' From that, it sounds like he moved to California shortly after his second marriage. It was definitely before his sister's death in 1944.

According to his granddaughter, Mildred (Yoakam) Mugge, Thomas' middle initial might have stood for Asbury. Mildred recalled hearing her mother say Thomas' middle name was something like that one time. Mildred's mother (Grace) said Thomas hated the name and would never tell anyone what it was.
