Carrol joined the Air Force in 1941 at age 19. Carrol, of Wall, SD, was graduated from the Air Corps technical school at Lowry Field, Denver on January 7, 1941. He took a three months supply course in the clerical department of the school, and had been asked to remain at Lowry Field as an instructor.
