Land records cited in the North English, Iowa Ballard family book say
that John Ballard bought two forty acre tracts of land in
Section 29 of Jackson Co., In. These 80 acres were sold 11 Dec 1838
and the record was signed by John and Sena Ballard, which is how
she always signed her name. That sale must mark when they moved to Iowa.
John and Asenah were in the Des Moines Co., Iowa census in 1840 and
the pension record of their son John N.
supports this since it says he was born in Des Moines Co.
By 1850, John and family have moved to Keokuk Co.
Three of Johns son were in the Civil War: John Newton, Joshua, and
Charles. They all came back to Iowa when they were discharged.
John's descendents who put together the North English area Ballard book
didn't know what happened to him after about 1870. One story was that
he and his second wife, Mary, also had a son named Philip and moved to Colorado.
