John was also called ``Newt'' in some items.
John served in the Civil war with Co. A, Sixth Regiment, Iowa Cavalry. He enlisted 22 Oct 1864 in Grinnell, Iowa. His enlistment was credited to LeRoy Twp, Benton Co., which is why he isn't mentioned in the Iowa Co. history books. He was discharged 17 Oct 1865 at Sioux City, Iowa
John returned to Iowa county after the war and lived there from 1865--1900. From October 1900 to Aug. 1901 he lived in Vernon Co., MO. Then he came back to Iowa Co. for two more years and in 1903 he moved to Oklahoma. Sometime between 1908 and 1917 he came back to Iowa since the North English Record had an article about them celebrating their 50th wedding anniversary in North English.
