Rans Bird Green, son of Thomas and Elizabeth Green, was born in North
Carolina, Feb. 25, 1792. He was named for his maternal grandmother. Her
maiden name was Ransbird. His parents came to Somerset, Pulaski County,
Kentucky. He was raised there. He was of medium height, of strong build,
had blue black hair, black or hazel eyes, fair skin and sandy beard. He
came to Indiana when he was quite a young man, while it was yet a
territory and took an active part, even made stump speeches to secure a
free constitution for the state. He was a strong abolitionist, voted so
where only 2 or 3 votes were cast in the county. He was always ready to
lend a hand to an underground railway. He was a farmer and cultivated
fruit trees.
He was first a Baptist but in the early days of the reformation in
Fayette County when John O'Lane preached there, he came into the
Christian Church. He was very fond of children. He was a man of chaste
language and would be angry if any one used a vulgar words in his
presence. He and his wife were very hospitable. Often they would have 2
to 4 orphans in their home. Rans Bird Green died April 2, 1853 at
Greenswood, Indiana. He was killed by a train.
