According to her obituary, Rose Zita Showalter entered the
Congregation of the Cedar Rapids Sisters of Mercy on Sept. 4,
1932. She made her final profession of vows on June 24, 1938
and was known as Sister Mary Madonna. She
taught for 39 years in schools staffed by the Sisters of Mercy at
Immaculate Conception and St. Wenceslaus high schools, Cedar Rapids,
and at St. Joseph's in Marion. She also taught at Garryowen, Decorah,
Ames, DeWitt, Waterloo, Oelwein, Fairfax, Elma and Evansdale. She
retired to the convent in 1973. She received a bachelor of arts degree
from Loras College and completed additional studies at Mount Mercy
College, Catholic University and the University if Northern Iowa,
Her nephew Paul was one of the priests officiating at her funeral.
The 1966 Farrell family history had 1935 as the year in which
she made her final profession of vows.
