Java by Dissection: The Essentials of Java Programming, Updated Edition, JavaPlace Edition, by Ira Pohl and Charlie McDowell, is an organized introduction to Java programming. If you have never done any programming, this book may be a little advanced for you. One reader has the following comments about this book, "I used this book to learn Java and found it very clear. It provides more of an introduction to programming than Sun's online tutorial. If you are already familiar with programming in C++, you can probably skip the first few chapters. ..." < | Essential Java for Scientists and Engineers, by Katherine M. Malan and Brian D. Hahn, is an introduction to Java programming with a special emphasis on using Java programs in the science and engineering context. The editorial review has the following comments about the book, "Essential Java serves as an introduction to the programming language, Java, for scientists and engineers, and can also be used by experienced programmers wishing to learn Java as an additional language. The book focuses on how Java, and object-oriented programming, can be used to solve science and engineering problems. Many examples are included from a number of different scientific and engineering areas, as well as from business and everyday life. Pre-written packages of code are provided to help in such areas as input/output, matrix manipulation and scientific graphing." Data Mining: Practical Machine Learning Tools and Techniques with Java Implementations, by Ian H. Witten and Eibe Frank, is an introduction to data mining using Java. One reader has the following comments about this book, "...On the one hand there are some books written for managers, on the other hand there are some pretty mathematical books for academics. But this book is the best mix. You get an introduction to data mining and learn step by step from the basics up to the hard algorithm stuff with nice examples. There is a clear theme structure, and the deep technical sections are marked, so you can read what you are most interested in. The book describes not only one algorithm, but a lot of them and discusses plusses and minuses. Where it's necessary it uses simple diagrams to illustrate something, not so much that it looks like they want to fill the pages, like in other books. Best of all, the algorithms are implemented as an open source java software named "weka". This is my state of the art data mining tool. You can see the algorithms working and use the implementations for your ideas (like me). If you are hungry to learn more about one or the other thing, the book provides a literature list. ..." Mastering MATLAB 6, by Duane Hanselman and Bruce R. Littlefield, is a comprehsive guide to using the latest features of the Matlab system. One reader has the following comments about the book, "This book is exactly what I've been looking for. It's a fantastic reference for all that is Matlab. I'm a graduate student who does numerical methods in Matlab frequently and to have a book like this handy is a real help." The Mathematica Book, Fifth Edition, by Stephen Wolfram, is the definitive guide to using the latest version of Mathematica. One reader has the following comments about the book, "If you need to use Mathematica for anything get this book for sure. It is simply excellent. It has everything that you would possibly need in order to operate in Mathematica. However, if you have an original version of Mathematica you would have this book with it, but regardless it is perfect and it is a must for everyone dealing with Mathematica. The best thing about the book is that not just that it has all the functions that Mathematica can operate, but also it has examples for every function, which makes is just perfect." The C++ Programming Language (3rd Edition), by Bjarne Stroustrup, presents the latest developments in the C++ language. Stroustrup is the inventor of this language, so he is obviously an authority on it. One reader has the following comments about the book, "I think this book was written for people who have already some experience with C or C++. New concepts are NOT introduced in an orderly or organized sequence. But they probably are not meant to be introduced in a strict order. Many concepts are inter-related. If you already have some ideas of what C++ as a language is about and what each feature of C++ is about, you should find the cross-references in the book quite useful. ..." C Programming Language (2nd Edition), by Brian Kernighan and Dennis Ritchie, is an authoritative guide to mastering C, written by the developers of the language. One reader has the following comments about the book, "I agree with all the glowing comments people have written about it, BUT! It is a book written by a computer programmer, for other computer programmers, not a book written by a teacher for a beginning student." C Primer Plus (4th Edition), by Stephen Prata, is a comprehensive introduction to the C language (970 pages). One reader has the following comments about the book, "Stephen Prata's "C Primer Plus, 4th Ed" (CPP4E) is an excellent book. I took a close look at the competition and even started reading O'Reilly's "Practical C Programming" before realizing CPP4E was the book for me. I had no C programming background, but had the knowledge of C-64 BASIC, Pascal, and other languages shared by many kids born in the 1970s. If you're looking for a well-conceived introduction to C, Prata's book is for you." Mathematics of Classical and Quantum Physics, by Frederick W. Byron, and W. Fuller Robert, is a high level review of the mathematical techniques used in classical and quantum physics. This text has 661 pages and the average customer review is five out of five stars. One reader has the following comments about the book, "This book is not, and I repeat, IS NOT for the inexperienced. This book is a GRADUATE LEVEL TEXT on mathematical physics. If you are an undergraduate student taking a physics class, this book will be of no use to you. I recommend that anyone interested in purchasing this book have a somewhat decent amount of mathematical background. I personally recommend Calculus I-IV, Advanced Calculus and Linear Algebra. If, though, you have this background, then this book is may just be for you. It is concise, to the point and presents a clear and well written discussion of mathematical physics."
