Merriam-Webster's Spanish-English Dictionary, by Merriam-Webster (Editor), Eileen M. Haraty(Preface), is a useful tool for those wishing to become more competent communicators in the Spanish language. The book has 800 pages and the average customer review is five stars out of five. One customer had the following comments about the book,"This book packs a lot of bang for your buck. Being the third dictionary I've owned, I am very pleased. Contains great phrasing examples and is well-organized. Has 80,000 entries, including modern terms and expressions. And it's small enough that you can pack it around with you! I highly recommend this as your choice of dictionary." Shorter Oxford English Dictionary, by William R. Trumble (Editor), Lesley Brown (Editor), Angus Stevenson (Editor), Judith Siefring (Editor), from Oxford University Press, is a tremendous storehouse of information on the current usage of words in the English language and on the etymology of words used in English. The book has 3,984 pages and the average customer review is five stars out of five. One reviewer has the following comments about this text,"I'll agree with everything that most reviewers have to say about the Shorter OED. If you're a serious writer, it's a valuable resource, since it includes all of the words in common English use since 1700, plus words included in earlier major writers such as Shakespeare. It's particularly useful if you're interested in the history of words and how definitions or spellings may have changed over time. In my own writing, I deal with material that spans different eras that may be in a document or part of an era I'm writing about. If the historical aspect is less important to you than just getting a reference for spelling, pronunciation and meaning, I'd recommend Merrium Webster's or American Heritage." Harper Collins Portuguese Concise Dictionary is a very useful guide for Brazilian and European Portuguese. The book has 768 pages and the average customer review is four and one half out of five stars. One customer had the following comments about the book, "I've been using this dictionary for about 6 months and have found it invaluable in my communications with friends in Brasil. It's very rare that a word cannot be found, or its meaning be off the mark. It's even rather up-to-date with common technical terms. I agree with other reviews that the quality of the binding is poor. I'm not hard on the book and already the binding is breaking apart in two or three places. Although it's not a grammar study book, some of the basic verb conjugations are given in a list in the front of the book." Langenscheidt's Pocket Dictionary German: German-English/English-German is an exceptionally useful dictionary for its size. The book has 768 pages and the average customer review is four and one half out of five stars. One customer had the following comments about the book, "Although the title is "Pocket Dictionary," this reference actually fills a niche between a bookshelf-sized dictionary and the pocket-sized dictionaries with the tiny print that tourists buy to take on their travels to Europe. ...Blue color coding helps individual words being defined stand out from the text so you can locate your word quickly. The blue coding is also used to make a functional thumb index. The vinyl cover and sewn binding make for good durability. This edition, copyright 2000, is completely revised and features the new German spelling. The listings include not just words, but also many important German and English proper names and abbreviation...."
