MEET THE TEAM[Russ & Tracy Pennington]
Greetings from Bangkok!
Spring 2001
While I am only a temporary addition to the Thailand Team, my heart is already captured by the missionaries and their families, by the people of Thailand and the beauty of their country. I arrived in Bangkok on February 2nd, just in time for all the excitement of new babies! My schedule has been a variety of teaching pre-school, baby sitting, helping with English Club, teaching times with the missionaries, and Bible study in English with new Thai friends. Everyday has been filled to overflowing with learning and laughter, prayer and blessings.Counting, Courage, Coyotes
Teaching the little boys pre-school is delightful. My students are Si Pennington (age 3), Josh Walter (age 4), and Kanaan Allen (age 5). We are learning letters together. During M-days we played Music with our Maracas, dressed up like the "Mighty M Men", and finger-painted messy "M" murals. This was followed by "B". We had brownies and talked about Baby Brothers and Blessings. We have had Popcorn Picnics, a Polite Punch and Pizza Party, and Prayers every morning for the President. (It was so sweet to hear their little voices saying, "God, please help George Bush to be a good president. Help him not be selfish and keep him safe.") Now we are learning letter C and the boys have perfected their ability to howl like Coyotes. We are learning about Courage and Counting. Our last day we will read the Christmas Story and sing Christmas Carols. Then we will be all ready for Easter and the letter "E"!
English Club
Saturdays are English Club with Russ. We have 18 kids ranging in age from 5 to 11. Working with Russ is lots of fun as we teach vocabulary words and silly songs in English. Each time he offers this course in 6-week increments and this Saturday is our last day. Several parents sit in on the class with their kids and it has been so exciting to then see them at church too! Two summers ago I taught English briefly in China. I loved my time there and the English Club has been a confirmation to me that ESL is something I would like to pursue as a future occupation and ministry.
Bible Study
On Thursday nights I study the Bible in English with Eck and Oat, two new Thai friends. Eck's parents and brother go to Siam Church and Oat is his girlfriend. This is probably my favorite thing that I am getting to be a part of. God is really connecting our hearts and building a friendship during our study time together. They are getting to practice their English and learn more about the Bible at the same time! It has been a challenge and a gift for me to study the Bible with new eyes, trying to see everything the way they are seeing it for the first time. Please pray for our times together.
My heart and mind are filled to overflowing with all that I am learning. The missionaries here are great teachers! I am learning about raising kids, doing ministry, having a passionate heart for God and the lost, and the power of prayer. It is with great anticipation that I look forward to my next three months here.
For the Kingdom,
Rachel Greer
