It's not quite the end of the week yet but it's the end of March so I thought I'd just go ahead and sum up.
Heroic Trio: Michelle Yeoh, Anita Mui and Maggie Cheung star in this over-the-top kung-fu movie from 1992. Wire stunts and dance-like choreography are sure to satisfy even those unfamiliar with this genre of film. I have also written a full review of this film and of many others.
Student rushes/dailies:
Recently acquired American Beauty score, (not soundtrack) by Thomas Neuman. Haunting and evocative (I've also seen the film, which would only help these feelings), I highly recommend it for when you're in one of those pensive mindsets... or, for whenever it calls to you, I suppose. Interesting how all the scenes with Angela feature some sort of exotic beat accentuated by tapping cymbals, or something very much like them, and a wavelike bassline that almost seems to undulate and speak words.
Currently reading enlightening but depressing Billions and Billions by Carl Sagan, intriguing Red Dragon by Thomas Harris, informative I Am Jackie Chan by of course Jackie Chan, and practical Hollywood 101 by Frederick Levy. Finished recently: dated but worthy of a read Invasion of the Body Snatchers by Jack Finney.
Ithaca the city isn't really bothering me all that much anymore, except for the parking problem. It seems I am destined to never find a spot anywhere except my lawn. During class, I parked in the faculty lot on campus a few times over the past couple of weeks without getting "caught" by the unnecessarily mean parking lady, but she eventually figured it out.
Fine for parking on my lawn (administered by the city of Ithaca: $15
Got fine for speeding ticket: $90. I love the letter they sent me, especially the way it was signed, "Very truly yours," right after telling me they're going to suspend my driver's license.
March has been the worst month yet for me fine-wise. Current count:
Nothing personal is really going on in my life outside of my own head. I bought my housemate's old microcassette recorders, so now I don't have to feel so bad about talking to myself anymore.

(my film)
Almost very nearly done. Sound is the only thing left to fill in, and it's so nice to have a committed member on my team who I know won't leave me hanging. DaveDave, here's a big thanks to you--my film would be very very boring without you.
Seen this week
Painted Faces: Sammo Hung plays Master Yu in this wonderful story of life in a Chinese Opera Academy. If you've read Jackie Chan's I Am Jackie Chan, you'll recognize a lot of this film. Interesting exploration of mentor-student relationships, and of the decline of Opera in Hong Kong. Worth seeing.
A good week -- I'm very impressed with some of my classmates' work.
Weather this week has been incredibly weird. After last weekend's wonderful springtime temperatures, the snow on Thursday was fairly surreal. Now that it's April, we can expect more rain, and probably a few more of those odd days that it's sunny, rainy and snowy all in the same hour, but at least the worst of it is behind us. Wow, that actually sounded fairly optimistic.
Fine for parking in a faculty parking lot two spaces away from a student parking lot (administered by IC): $20
March Total Fine Total
