Rewind - Additional Playing Features of DVD
Under each of their own headings, many of the major playing features of DVD have been touched
on, each of which heighten the movie experience in their own way. Below are some of the minor
playing features that help to make DVD the king of the hill in home video/theatre entertainment.
Languages - DVD discs have the capacity of containing 8 separate
audio/language tracks. Most often (in zone 1), the discs only carry 3 audio tracks usually
English, French & Spanish. The audio tracks are as well often used to hold commentaries on the
movie by those involved in its production, or soundtrack/music only tracks. The languages are
often set in either the player's or disc's menu, but can often be changed in an instant by using
the audio button on the remote or player.
Subtitles - DVD discs are capable of a total of 32 different subtitles.
Subtitles on a DVD disc are quite different than a closed caption type subtitle which is made
up of generated characters from the close captioning harware. DVD subtitles are stored in what
is called subpicture streams, what this means is that the subtitle characters are not generated,
but are actual graphic images that are overlayed over the running video. This allows for
endless possibilities such as asian characters or virtually any graphic/picture.
Digital Video - This allows for such playing features as
slo-motion as well as perfect pausing with crystal clear still images.
Players - One of the great features of the DVD players, which has been
touched on under other headings, is their ability to fit into practically any home entertainment
system configuration. DVD players are able to support a wide range of audio configurations from
the most basic mono to the latest 5.1 Dolby Digital technology. As for video, the players
support both the standard size as well as widescreen televisions, and in addition support a
wide range of video cabling from RF to Component (depending on the player). What this means, is
that the players will work with the home entertainment system you have now, and as well work
with and future upgrades you may make, and all without having to upgrade the player.
