  Luc Besson was born in Paris in 1959. His parents were diving instructors, so he lived near the Mediterranean coast for all his childhood. When he was 17, Besson was involved in a car accident that prevented him from pursuing a career as a diver. Completely devastated he spent a year contemplating his life and finally decided that the idea of making films attracted him more than most. He dropped out of secondary school, and started experimenting with super-8 film. At the age of 19 he moved to Hollywood, and stayed there for three years, trying to make his name in the American film industry. On returning to France, he founded his own production company, "Les films du dauphin".
