French musician Eric Serra was born in Paris on September 9th, 1959. He began playing guitar at the age of five, and ten years later he formed his first rock band. In 1976 he became a professional guitarist and began recording with various singers and musical groups. In 1977 at the age of eighteen he met Luc Besson. They soon became friends, and in 1981 Serra composed a short piece of music which was used in Besson's short movie "L'Avant-dernier". The two of them work closely when writing a film score. First Besson tells him what kind of movie it is and what kind of music he needs. Then Serra starts composing when the movie is almost completed.
