Talk about your ultimate sandbox! The Great Sand Dunes are a corner of the San Luis valley that collects all the sand blown across from the next mountain range, the San Juan Mountains. The winds sweep from west to east, then as the air is forced upward at the Sangre de Cristo Mountains, the heavier particles of sand are dropped creating these huge dunes! You can wander around on them, and even get a permit to camp there. But it's hard walking! Like walking on loosely packed beach sand. They read hundreds of feet high and are really beautiful. | |
We drove up to Zapata Falls and found the views looking toward the sand dunes more and more spectacular. | |
ok, so you probably can't read the mountains on the sign below. All are 14K peaks, and you can match them up in the pictures above. To make this load quickly, the resolution had to be small. From left to right, the peaks listed are Challenger Point, Kit Carson Peak, Crestone Peak, Crestone Needle, Cleveland Peak, and I think the one on the far right is Herald. I can't quite read that one well enough, the sign was damaged. | |
