"Keely wanted to have a natural delivery but she was in so much pain. The baby was too big for her and she was crying hysterically," says a source.
Pierce, 43, clamed her down and told her, "Listen, my darling, you've suffered enough. Have a C-section."
Keely, 33, who was registered at LA's Cedars-Sinai Medical Center as Kelly Forest, underwent an emergency C-section. The baby finally arrived at 9:50 p.m. Jan 13, weighing a hefty 9 pounds.
The drama began early that morning when Keely's water broke. Pierce, who stars in the upcoming movie Dante's Peak , drove Keely through winding canyon roads near their Malibu home to the hospital 30 miles away.
"Pierce phoned the hospital from his car to tell them they were on their way," a friend tells Star. "Keely was crying during the whole trip. Pierce was wonderful. He held Keely's hand and spoke soothingly to her. He has other children and he explained to her that pain was a normal part of giving birth.
"After the baby came, Pierce even gave him his first bath. He wanted to do everything for the baby."
But Keely-who's 5' 7" and ballooned to 160 pounds during pregnancy -- intends to do her share of parenting, too, "I want to be there 100 percent for my baby and I want to do everything right," she told friends.
The morning after the baby's birth, Keely was finally able to enjoy a meal. "She ate a big breakfast of waffles, eggs and sausages, " adds the friend.
"Keely still feels sore because she's had major abdominal surgery and recovery can take up to four weeks"
Friends are delighted that Pierce, who lost his wife Cassandra to cancer several years ago, has finally found happiness again.
"And it warms Keely's heart to see Pierce so devoted to his little son.
"He made her cry when he told her, 'You've given me the greatest gift!'"
"He's called Dylan because Keely and I both love that name and Thomas after both our fathers. I can't describe how happy Keely and Dylan Thomas have made me. They have completed my wonderful family. I am very lucky man. Many people never find perfect partner. I found two."
