A quirky satire of the horror genre, this Swedish slasher has a neat premise about a horror film editor who becomes completely absorbed in his work and goes on a killing spree as a result. "Evil Ed" makes quite a few satirical jabs at the horror genre, especially the kind of movies where psychopaths are having too much fun looking for their victims in hiding (like what Jack Nicholson eventually does in "The Shining" or what the crazy cop constantly does in "Psycho Cop 2"). Some common horror deaths are taken to comical extremes, such as a decapitation where the severed head flies for a long distance (maybe not quite as long as the floating head from "The Incredible Melting Man" but still ridiculously long enough to get a chuckle). However, not all the jokes fly as well as the severed head, and the movie gets very silly by trying too hard to be funny. Some of these lesser moments include a lame dream sequence with Satan wearing a oversized, plastic bull mask and a SWAT team with unbelievably bad marksmanship. It's possible that the movie is satrizing the inept policework commonly found in horror films, but these guys miss even when Ed's a easy shot 20 feet away in a narrow hallway! The bottom line: "Evil Ed" is gory and occasionally funny, but its humor is a little too hit-and-miss to merit a strong recommendation. |
