SHRIEKER

It would only be a matter of time before someone consulted a thesaurus to find another word for "screamer", since that word has been used so many times in the horror genre already (at least three horror movies have the title "Screamers"). Hence, we instead have a "Shrieker", courtesy of the creativity department at Full Moon Pictures. Unlike the robotic screamers from the underrated 1995 sci-fi/horror movie "Screamers", a shrieker is a bug-eyed, two-headed monster vaguely resembling Large Marge from "Pee Wee's Big Adventure", and it travels by crossing dimensions every now and then. In this picture, it has a easy time decimating some college-age squatters who don't bother to help each other when they're in danger. Unfortunately, none of the deaths are particularly interesting or gory, and the monster is done in by a piece of paper! Sure, this piece of paper has a sinister mark of death written on it, but come on, something like that should be a warning, not an actual cause of death. When you think about it, that's just as ridiculous as getting a fish from the mafia (a mark of death) and expecting the fish to kill you directly instead of some mobsters coming over to drown you! The sad thing is that this movie is not a horror-comedy or even a satire. Compared to some other Full Moon pictures like "The Killer Eye" and "Head of the Family", "Shrieker" is a rather serious movie. If you're expecting some T&A to make up for any shortcomings, there isn't much nudity either, though the cast is generally attractive physically.

The bottom line: You're better off turning a deaf ear to "Shrieker" and finding another horror flick.

** NOTE: The more dots on the domino, the better the movie. If it's a DVD with a rating of 3 dots or less, you might as well consider it to be a Deadly Venereal Disease instead of a Digital Video Disk. **
