WITCHBOARD

"Witchboard" is a rather mild yet interesting and suspenseful horror film directed and written by Kevin Tenney, who also directed the delightful "Night of the Demons" and wrote the less-than-delightful "Night of the Demons III". Some minor similarities can be seen between this movie and the two from the Night of the Demons series, such as the ghost noises, the falling sequences, and the rather annoying police lieutenant who is into magic tricks. Unlike the first and third "Night of the Demons" movies however, "Witchboard" skimps on the gratuitous elements, almost to the point where its R-rating is questionable. Aside from a few somewhat bloody scenes and Tawny Kitaen being nude in a steamy shower scene (nice...), this film really is mild compared to others in its genre. Nevertheless, it is interesting with its characters investigating the paranormal activities, and the Ouija board sessions with strange spirits generate some suspense, especially later in the movie. I even learned a thing or two about Ouija boards, such as the origin of their name. It's also one of the rare movies with an atheistic character who doesn't get demonized in the script for his beliefs (nonbelievers in movies usually end up villified, dead, or converted because that's what the masses want to see). All in all, "Witchboard" is an intelligent, if understated, horror film that warrants a look.

QUARTER BY QUARTER ANALYSIS OF MOVIE

OVERALL RATING

8 out of 12

** NOTE: The more dots on the domino, the better the movie. 12 dots on the domino is the best rating while no dots means it would only take up valuable space in the dumpster. **
