ZOMBIE (1979)

Just to clear things up, "Zombie" is one of the U.S. titles for Lucio Fulci's unofficial sequel to George A. Romero's "Dawn of the Dead". It's also called "Zombie 2: The Dead Are Among Us"! What is this? A movie that is its own sequel? The nomenclature is no better in Europe. In Italy, "Dawn of the Dead" is called "Zombie" while Fulci's film is called "Zombie 2". Meanwhile in Germany, "Zombie 2" is actually "Day of the Dead", the official sequel to "Dawn of the Dead"! Because of this screwy title scheme, some people say Fulci's movie is a rip-off of "Dawn of the Dead". The name may have ripped off in Italy, but otherwise this reputation is largely undeserved. "Zombie" is nothing like "Dawn of the Dead", except for the fact there are zombies lumbering around in both of these flicks. "Zombie" has a completely different story and tries to be more hard core by actually embracing the X-rating, but oddly enough, it really doesn't have that much gratuitous nudity or gore. Granted, there is a very gruesome eye-gouging scene, but otherwise the movie is not nearly as extreme as its X-rating might suggest. Other than the a few good isolated moments such as the eye-gouging, some overacting, and a moderately entertaining last quarter, it's rather boring overall, and there is no intelligent dialogue to carry the movie whenever the zombies are away. It doesn't help when the actors don't put any heart into their performances either, though the one playing drunken wife who hams it up to high heaven is hysterical (unfortunately, she only gets a couple minutes of screen time). Also, you know you're getting something cheesy when a monochrome monitor is generating the title during the opening credits! The bottom line: A mediocre effort, though some B-movie buffs might actually enjoy "Zombie". It certainly doesn't approach the greatness of "Dawn of the Dead" and "Dead Alive".
