This is the first year in the long (three year) career of the "Mikey" Awards that the actual best movie from that year got the nomination for Best Picture from that snobbish Academy that gives out the Oscars. So I don't have to right that injustice like in past years (for The Truman Show last year and Amistad the year before that). But, just in case the Acedemy doesn't bestowe the Oscar where it belongs I have made sure that the rightful winner gets the "Mikey"... American Beauty.
Writor Alan Ball and Director Sam Mendes bring us a look at a "typical" suburban family in a typical suburban neighborhood in anything but typical situations. The dad (Kevin Spacey in his Best Actor winning role) is a complete dork who totally reinvents himself. The mother (played by Annette Benning in her Best Actress role) is the overstressed working woman who is slowly losing it, and the daughter (played by Thora Birch in, suprise suprise, her Best Supporting Actress role) is embarrased of them both. With an incredibly simple and funny, yet powerfly dramatic story and great acting (as shown by the three "Mikeys" for Acting by the Burnham trio) this movie truely lived up to its name.
Congratulations to American Beauty, the Winner of the 2000 "Mikey" Award for Best Picture
