The Best Of 1980 - 1990
Pride (In The Name Of Love) (3:48)
Originally released in The Unforgettable Fire
    - An excellent opening tune for this compilation, as it reminds those critics of Pop why they fell in love with U2 in the first place. The song is still brilliant, in my opinion, and it's good that the opening song isn't off of The Joshua Tree.

One man come in the name of love
One man come and go
One man come, he to justify
One man to overthrow

In the name of love
What more in the name of love
In the name of love
What more in the name of love

One man caught on a barbed wire fence
One man he resist
One man washed on an empty beach.
One man betrayed with a kiss

In the name of love
What more in the name of love
In the name of love
What more in the name of love

(Nobody like you...)

Early morning, April 4
Shot rings out in the Memphis sky
Free at last, they took your life
They could not take your pride

In the name of love
What more in the name of love
In the name of love
What more in the name of love
In the name of love
What more in the name of love...

New Year's Day (4:17)
Originally released in War
    - Another great hit, which is well received on this album.  This song actually made me want to run out and buy War, because I thought it was great.  A huge difference between this version and the original release, and that this is the version you'll hear in the music video.  It's shorter, and a verse is taken out.  There's some great lines missing as well, and over all I enjoy the original version far better.  I'm going to give U2 the benefit of the doubt though, and say they released this shortened version so they could tack on the bonus track at the end.

Yeah...

All is quiet on New Year's Day
A world in white gets underway
I want to be with you
Be with you night and day
Nothing changes on New Year's Day
On New Year's Day

I will be with you again
I will be with you again

Under a blood red sky
A crowd has gathered in black and white
Arms entwined, the chosen few
The newspapers says, says
Say it's true it's true...
And we can break through
Though torn in two
We can be one

   I...I will begin again
   I...I will begin again

I will be with you again
I will be with you again
I will be with you again
I will be with you again
I will be with you again
I will be with you again...

With Or Without You (4:55)
Originally released in The Joshua Tree
    - The first of the 'Great Three' opening songs of The Joshua Tree on this album.  It's a nice song, yes, but I thought they could have put "Bullet The Blue Sky" on instead.  But ah well.

See the stone set in your eyes
See the thorn twist in your side
I wait for you

Sleight of hand and twist of fate
On a bed of nails she makes me wait
And I wait without you

With or without you
With or without you

Through the storm we reach the shore
You give it all but I want more
And I'm waiting for you

With or without you
With or without you
I can't live
With or without you

And you give yourself away
And you give yourself away
And you give
And you give
And you give yourself away

My hands are tied
My body bruised, she's got me with
Nothing to win and
Nothing left to lose

And you give yourself away
And you give yourself away
And you give
And you give
And you give yourself away

With or without you
With or without you
I can't live
With or without you

With or without you
With or without you
I can't live
With or without you
With or without you

I Still Haven't Found What I'm Looking For (4:38)
Originally released on The Joshua Tree
    - Arg!  I really hate it when compilations do this.  This is the second of the 'Great Three' opening songs off The Joshua Tree, and it's not that I object it being on the album, but the fact that it's RIGHT AFTER a song from the same album!  Every compilation should break songs up and have them paired off with different eras, different albums, different times!  Why?  Because we can get a good appreciation of the evolution of the band's music.  Still, not as bad as later in this album when it's completely off of Rattle And Hum.

I have climbed highest mountain
I have run through the fields
Only to be with you
Only to be with you

I have run
I have crawled
I have scaled these city walls
These city walls
Only to be with you

But I still haven't found what I'm looking for
But I still haven't found what I'm looking for

I have kissed honey lips
Felt the healing in her fingertips
It burned like fire
This burning desire

I have spoke with the tongue of angels
I have held the hand of a devil
It was warm in the night
I was cold as a stone

But I still haven't found what I'm looking for
But I still haven't found what I'm looking for

I believe in the kingdom come
Then all the colors will bleed into one
Bleed into one
Well yes I'm still running

You broke the bonds and you
Loosed the chains
Carried the cross
Of my shame
Of my shame
You know I believed it

But I still haven't found what I'm looking for
But I still haven't found what I'm looking for
But I still haven't found what I'm looking for
But I still haven't found what I'm looking for...

Sunday Bloody Sunday (4:40)
Originally released in War
    - I am so glad they stuck this song in here.  This coupled with "New Years Day" was my introduction to War, and this was a great intro, although I would have like to seen "Two Hearts Beat As One" on this album.

Yes...

I can't believe the news today
Oh, I can't close my eyes
And make it go away
How long...
How long must we sing this song?
How long? How long...
'cause tonight...we can be as one
Tonight...

Broken bottles under children's feet
Bodies strewn across the dead end street
But I won't heed the battle call
It puts my back up
Puts my back up against the wall

Sunday, Bloody Sunday
Sunday, Bloody Sunday
Sunday, Bloody Sunday

And the battle's just begun
There's many lost, but tell me who has won
The trench is dug within our hearts
And mothers, children, brothers, sisters
Torn apart

Sunday, Bloody Sunday
Sunday, Bloody Sunday

How long...
How long must we sing this song?
How long? How long...
'cause tonight...we can be as one
Tonight...tonight...

Sunday, Bloody Sunday
Sunday, Bloody Sunday

Wipe the tears from your eyes
Wipe your tears away
Oh, wipe your tears away
Oh, wipe your tears away
(Sunday, Bloody Sunday)
Oh, wipe your blood shot eyes
(Sunday, Bloody Sunday)

Sunday, Bloody Sunday (Sunday, Bloody Sunday)
Sunday, Bloody Sunday (Sunday, Bloody Sunday)

And it's true we are immune
When fact is fiction and TV reality
And today the millions cry
We eat and drink while tomorrow they die

(Sunday, Bloody Sunday)

The real battle just begun
To claim the victory Jesus won
On...

Sunday Bloody Sunday
Sunday Bloody Sunday...

Bad (5:50)
Originally released in The Unforgettable Fire
    - I have to push aside my personal bias for this one, because I have to side with it being on the album.  It was a hit, and as such, is a good one to put on here.  Since there is no music video for bad, one was taken from the Rattle & Hum tour, where Bono is wearing fireman's pants and no shirt, and getting awfully sweaty.  To be honest, I think the music video version is better than the original, but I think it's countered by the fact that the song goes on far too long.

If you twist and turn away
If you tear yourself in two again
If I could, yes I would
If I could, I would
Let it go
Surrender
Dislocate

If I could throw this
Lifeless lifeline to the wind
Leave this heart of clay
See you walk, walk away
Into the night
And through the rain
Into the half-light
And through the flame

If I could through myself
Set your spirit free
I'd lead your heart away
See you break, break away
Into the light
And to the day

To let it go
And so to fade away
To let it go
And so fade away

I'm wide awake
I'm wide awake
Wide awake
I'm not sleeping
Oh, no, no, no

If you should ask then maybe they'd
Tell you what I would say
True colors fly in blue and black
Bruised silken sky and burning flag
Colors crash, collide in blood shot eyes

If I could, you know I would
If I could, I would
Let it go...

This desperation
Dislocation
Separation
Condemnation
Revelation
In temptation
Isolation
Desolation
Let it go

And so fade away
To let it go
And so fade away
To let it go
And so to fade away

I'm wide awake
I'm wide awake
Wide awake
I'm not sleeping
Oh, no, no, no

Where The Streets Have No Name (4:35)
Originally released in The Joshua Tree
    - This is my favourite of the 'Great Three' opening songs from The Joshua Tree, and the third on this album.  I do agree with it being on the album, and I also give kudos to the makers of this album for not having all three songs together (or even worse, together as the first three songs).

I want to run
I want to hide
I want to tear down the walls
That hold me inside
I want to reach out
And touch the flame
Where the streets have no name

I want to feel sunlight on my face
I see the dust cloud disappear
Without a trace
I want to take shelter from the poison rain
Where the streets have no name

Where the streets have no name
Where the streets have no name
We're still building
Then burning down love
Burning down love
And when I go there
I go there with you
It's all I can do

The city's aflood
And our love turns to rust
We're beaten and blown by the wind
Trampled in dust
I'll show you a place
High on a desert plain
Where the streets have no name

Where the streets have no name
Where the streets have no name
We're still building
Then burning down love
Burning down love
And when I go there
I go there with you
It's all I can do
Our love turns to rust
We're beaten and blown by the wind
Blown by the wind
Oh, and I see love
See our love turn to rust
We're beaten and blown by the wind
Blown by the wind
Oh, when I go there
I go there with you
It's all I can do

I Will Follow (3:36)
Originally released in Boy
    - I approve of them putting their first big hit on this album.  There are a ton of bands who forget about their origins and what made them popular.  U2 isn't one of them.  It's also a great way to attract an audience to buy the first album...I know I did.

I will follow...

I was on the outside when you said
You said you needed me
I was looking at myself
I was blind, I could not see

A boy tries hard to be a man
His mother takes him by his hand
If he stops to think he starts to cry
Oh why

If you walkaway, walkaway
I walkaway, walkaway...I will follow

If you walkaway, walkaway
I walkaway, walkaway...I will follow

I was on the inside
When they pulled the four walls down
I was looking through the window
I was lost, I am found

Walkaway, walkaway
I walkaway, walkaway...I will follow
If you walkaway, walkaway,
I walkaway, walkaway...I will follow
I will follow

Your eyes make a circle
I see you when I go in there
 Your eyes, your eyes...

If you walkaway, walkaway
I walkaway, walkaway..I will follow

If you walkaway, walkaway
I walkaway, walkaway...I will follow

I will follow
I will follow...

The Unforgettable Fire (4:53)
Originally released in The Unforgettable Fire
    - One of my favourite songs, peroid, and one I'm happy to report is on this album.  It's quite spaced in the album, something I'm also happy about, and furthermore is a great followup to the last song.

Ice
Your only rivers run cold
These city lights
They shine as silver and gold
Dug from the night
Your eyes as black as coal

Walk on by
Walk on through
Walk 'til you run
And don't look back
For here I am

Carnival
The wheels fly and the colors spin
Through alcohol
Red wine that punctures the skin
Face to face
In a dry and waterless place

Walk on by
Walk on through
So sad to besiege your love so head on
Stay this time
Stay tonight in a lie
I'm only asking but I...
I think you know
Come on take me away
Come on take me away
Come on take me home
Home again

And if the mountain should crumble
Or disappear into the sea
Not a tear, no not I

Stay in this time
Stay tonight in...
Ever after, this love in time
And if you save your love
Save it all

Don't push me too far
Don't push me too far
Tonight
Tonight
Tonight...

Sweetest Thing *The Single Mix* (3:00)
    - Of course, this song is the only one from this album that isn't from any previous album, but it might have been.  The song was written in The Joshua Tree era as a gift from Bono to his wife Ali.  However, the band felt the album was complete enough and decided not to release it in the album.  It was released as a single in the "Where The Streets Have No Name" single (see the B-Sides for this album).  This particular version is different, and a little more current with the band's style.  The music video is quite hilarious, and features Ali in the beginning.  She sits down in a car with Bono facing her, looking more than a little apologetic.  The whole video is the great lengths Bono goes to as he tries to make it up to her.  Funny video, great song.

My love she throws me like a rubber ball
Oh oh oh, the sweetest thing
But she won't catch me or break my fall
Oh oh oh, the sweetest thing
Baby's got blue skies up ahead
But in this I'm a rain cloud
You know she wants a dry kind of love
Oh oh oh, the sweetest thing

I'm losing you
I'm losing you
Ain't love the sweetest thing

I wanted to run but she made me crawl
Oh oh oh, the sweetest thing
Eternal fire, she turned me to straw
Oh oh, the sweetest thing
I know I got black eyes
But they burn so brightly for her
I guess it's a blind kind of love
Oh oh oh, the sweetest thing

I'm losing you
I'm losing you
Ain't love the sweetest thing
(Ain't love the sweetest thing)
Ain't love the sweetest thing
(Ain't love the sweetest thing)

Blue-eyed boy meets a brown-eyed girl
Oh oh oh, the sweetest thing
You can sew it up but you still see the tear
Oh oh oh, the sweetest thing
Baby's got blue skies up ahead
And in this I'm a rain cloud
Ours is a stormy kind of love
Oh oh oh, the sweetest thing

Doo doo doot doot
Doo doo doot doot
Doo doo doot doot
Doot doot doot doot

Doo doo doot doot
Doo doo doot doot
Doo doo doot doot
Doot doot doot doot

Doo doo doot doot
Doo doo doot doot
Doo doo doot doot
Doot doot doot doot

The sweetest thing
Oh, the sweetest thing

Desire (2:59)
Originally released in Rattle And Hum
    - One of the single best songs from this album, and an excellent addition to this album.  I'm not entirely sure as to why this song isn't earlier in the album, and I believe it should swap places with "I Still Haven't Found What I'm Looking For".  Then the album would seem a little more balanced.

(Yeah)

Lover, I'm on the street
Gonna go where the bright lights
And the big city meet
With a red guitar...on fire
Desire

She's a candle burning in my room
Yeah I'm like the needle, needle and spoon
Over the counter with a shotgun
Pretty soon everybody got one
And the fever when I'm beside her
Desire, desire

And the fever...getting higher
Desire, desire...burning, burning

She's the dollars
She's my protection
Yeah she's a promise
In the year of election
Oh sister, I can't let you go
Like a preacher stealing hearts
At a traveling show
For love or money money money
money money money money money
money money money
And the fever, getting higher
Desire, desire, desire, desire
Desire, desire

When Love Comes To Town (4:17)
Originally released in Rattle And Hum
    - Arg!  Noooooo!  Okay, firstly let me say that I enjoy this song, and think the blues thing works for U2.  But it's right after a song from the same album.  This is a compilation.  As such, it's an unspoken rule that songs from the same album should be split up. We bought this album BECAUSE it's a compilation, we don't want to buy the same albums over and over again, and having this situation makes it sure seem like that's what's going on.  But, yeah, good song.

I was a sailor, I was lost at sea
I was under the waves
Before love rescued me
I was a fighter, I could turn on a thread
Now I stand accused of the things I've said

Love comes to town I'm gonna jump that train
When love comes to town I'm gonna catch that flame
Maybe I was wrong to ever let you down
But I did what I did before love came to town

I used to make love under a red sunset
I was making promises I was soon to forget
She was pale as the lace of her wedding gown
But I left her standing before love came to town

I ran into a juke joint when I heard a guitar scream
The notes were turning blue, I was dazing in a dream
As the music played I saw my life turn around
That was the day before love came to town

When love comes to town I'm gonna jump that train
When love comes to town I'm gonna catch that flame
Maybe I was wrong to ever let you down
But I did what I did before love came to town

When love comes to town I'm gonna jump that train
When love comes to town I'm gonna catch that flame
Maybe I was wrong to ever let you down
But I did what I did before love came to town

I was there when they crucified my Lord
I held the scabbard when the soldier drew his sword
I threw the dice when they pierced his side
But I've seen love conquer the great divide

When love comes to town I'm gonna catch that train
When love comes to town I'm gonna catch that flame
Maybe I was wrong to ever let you down
But I did what I did before love came to town

Angel Of Harlem (3:49)
Originally released in Rattle And Hum
    - GAAAAHHHH!!!  Not again!  Yes, another release from Rattle And Hum.  I really do like this song, and I'm glad it's on here, but come on people!  See the last song for specific comments.

It was a cold and wet December day
When we touched the ground at JFK
Snow was melting on the ground
On BLS I heard the sound
Of an angel

New York, like a Christmas tree
Tonight this city belongs to me
Angel

Soul love...this love won't let me go
So long...Angel of Harlem

Birdland on fifty-three
The street sounds like a symphony
We got John Coltrane and a love supreme
Miles says she's got to be an angel

Lady Day got diamond eyes
She sees the truth behind the lies
Angel

Soul love...this love won't let me go
So long...Angel of Harlem
Angel of Harlem

She says it's heart...heart and soul...
Yeah yeah...(yeah)
Yeah yeah...(right now)

Blue light on the avenue
God knows they got to you
An empty glass, the lady sings
Eyes swollen like a bee sting
Blinded you lost your way
Through the side streets and the alleyway
Like a star exploding in the night
Falling to the city in broad daylight
An angel in Devil's shoes
Salvation in the blues
You never looked like an angel
Yeah yeah...Angel of Harlem

Angel...Angel of Harlem...
Angel...Angel of Harlem...
Angel...Angel of Harlem...
Angel...Angel of Harlem...

All I Want Is You (6:31)
Originally released in Rattle And Hum
    - A beautiful closing songs (on both albums), it basically summerizes U2's music from this decade, and maybe even the next.  I really enjoy listening to this song, and I don't think I need to mention the fact that it's right after three songs from the same album. The best part is after the climax and the song has ended, "October" just finishes things off.

You say you want
Diamonds on a ring of gold
You say you want
Your story to remain untold

But all the promises we make
From the cradle to the grave
When all I want is you

You say you'll give me
A highway with no one on it
Treasure just to look upon it
All the riches in the night

You say you'll give me
Eyes in a moon of blindness
A river in a time of dryness
A harbour in the tempest
But all the promises we make
From the cradle to the grave
When all I want is you

You say you want
Your love to work out right
To last with me through the night

You say you want
Diamonds on a ring of gold
Your story to remain untold
Your love not to grow cold

All the promises we break
From the cradle to the grave
When all I want is you

You...all I want is...
You...all I want is...
You...all I want is...
You...

October *Hidden Track* (3:20)
Originally released in October
    - I love this song, and it continues right where "All I Want Is You" left off.  It's too bad that "Fire" or "Gloria" didn't make it onto this album, but at least this beautiful piano piece did.

October
And the trees are stripped bare
Of all they wear
What do I care

October
And kingdoms rise
And kingdoms fall
But you go on...and on...
