Arctostaphylos uva-ursi
Antiseptic action upon hemorrhoids and genital diseases. A reliable remedy for kidney and bladder infection. Cleanses and strengthens the spleen. Stimulates digestion. Key nutrients. A, iron, manganese, ursolic acid. Uva ursi's active constituents are volatile oil, arbutin, quercetin, ericolin, methylarbutin, myricetin, tannin (6-7%), and ursolic, galic and malic acids. The rather large amount of tannins would seem to suggest strong antibacterial properties. As a matter of fact, uva ursi has been used in modern medicine as a urinary antiseptic and, in the past, to treat excessive menstrual discharges.
