Massage for
FIBROMYALGIA and
CHRONIC FATIGUE SYNDROME .
The European Journal of Pain published a study showing that
massage relieved pain, reduced depression,
and improved the quality of life in people with fibromyalgia. General
studies on massage prove that it lowers levels of stress hormones,
increases production of serotonin in the brain, and leads to improved
sleep. The Journal of Chronic Fatigue Syndrome included a study of
massage which indicated that patients receiving massage showed less
depression, pain, anxiety, stress and that it enhanced sleep. - Sterling

" Judyetter Baker is a
really awesome teacher who has worked wonderfully well with me in her
home studio in Centerville, VA. She has lots of training and
is very
skilled at working with people who have many limitations. Although
lots of CFS people probably can't do pilates, over the years I've found
that pilates has been an enormous help as long as i do it the right way
with the right teachers. Once i developed fibro i could no
longer do
simple yoga so i was thrilled to be able to do pilates. It has helped
me a whole bunch with being able to walk a lot more but also the
pilates exercises focus on the body "core" which is where all our
internal organs are so i think having those muscles exercised helps our
insides function well too (though that is just my idea, this should be
confirmed)
The one thing i need to stress is if you get
someone who is not familar with CFS etc. you can do more harm than good
so i always ask a lot of questions before i'll work with someone. Also
you really have to work 1 on 1 with a teacher because all pilates
instructors have told me that the regular classes and videos are
probably not good for cfs/fibro people unless they really know what
they are doing. I like to go twice a week, maybe 3 times if i'm having
a good week and can dig up the money. But also i've done once a week
often too.
I've discovered over the years that doing a half
hour of pilates rather than the standard hour works best for me. I have
asked 3 different teachers as i've moved around the country about doing
the half hour and they all agreed as long as i was flexible about
scheduling to help them not lose time. Usually i just pay a little more
than half the going hour rate. Judyette was happy to do this too. She
is also a wonderful caring positive person.
The other good place
to go for pilates is Studio BE in Fairfax corners near the government
center. I've been going there about a year. Judyette also teaches there
for people who don't want to drive to centerville
and the other teachers who would be good for fibro are the owner
Cherie, and also Diane. "

Therapy Pools
From a CFSupport Email:
Thank you to our members for responding to Cynthia's M2M (member to
member) inquiry about warm pool therapy and more. Here is some of the
back and forth between our members. Thank you, Cynthia, for helping to
compile this summary. - Elly

Hi!
I went to a place called Nova Care in McLean for pool
therapy. The water is very warm!

Hi Cynthia,
I'm responding to your query about pools. Although I
don't have personal experience with the pool, I know that the National
Rehab Hospital (NRH) in NE DC does have a pool. Don't know if that
would be manageable for you, but at one time, they did have a program
for fibromyalgia. (See DC
area Programs of FM/CFS.)
I learned this because I had a PT evaluation at NRH for MetroAccess.
You
could have your doctor write a scrip with specifics of what you need,
then call the physical therapy dept. - Celia
Thanks Celia, I am in Alexandria, near Landmark. I have no problem with
a prescription, can get it.
It is going to and from. Thanks for your thoughts and help. Cyn

Cynthia - how far do you want to go for your pool therapy? Sibley
Hospital in northwest DC has a warm water pool for physical therapy. My
husband used it a year or so ago. Linda
Linda, I have difficulty driving distance, etc. A cab would be costly.
Sibley sounds great though- I am glad to know it. I will contact them
and
see if they know any closer facility. Many thanks. Cyn

I attended my pool therapy in Herndon at the Worldgate pool.
It was really cool because you could use their sauna and they had a
real nice locker room with free soap and shampoo to use.
The therapy was at I think Dominion Therapy in Herndon.
They have an agreement with the pool.
The pool is pretty warn.
I have also used the community pool in Herndon, it is pretty warm there
too.
I have also gone to a class at the Holiday Inn in Sterling.
All of this was a few years ago.
I hope this helps.
The pool therapy did help my fibromyalgia, but the DR had to use a
different diagnosis to get me [insurance coverage?].
-Susan
Thanks Susan, I appreciate your help very much. Wish you well.
I need to find something close to home in Alexandria area. All the
best. Cyn

Hey Cynthia,
Just a thought on heated pools from another member of the support group.
I am finding occasional mention that chlorine is a toxin to
which
exposure should be reduced. It goes without saying that
filtered
drinking water is a good idea. But I am increasingly
wondering
about absorption through the skin of the chlorine and chlorine
compounds used to control pathogens in swimming pools and hot tubs,
where chlorine levels are particularly high. Also, the
inhaling
of the chlorine vapors from those pools and tubs may be an
issue.
Bromine is also sometimes used and also presents a potential toxic
challenge.
There are already some shower heads on the market that supposedly
neutralize the chlorine in shower water, where the chlorine levels are
much lower than in swimming pools and hot tubs. There is an
ozone
approach to controlling pathogens in swimming pools; but I gather that
it is expensive, and I have never personally seen an ozone-treated
pool. But I have read of a comparison of a chlorine pool with
an
ozone pool made by a swim team at Stanford University. The
team
greatly preferred the ozone-treated pool because of reduced eye
irritation.
This is a subject that I have NOT adequately investigated, but caution
may be advisable for individuals whose toxic load or other health
challenges are already significant. As a fellow who greatly
enjoys swimming, I am especially unhappy about this situation.
Regards,
Ron
Hi Ronald, Yes I have read this. I agree 100%. The toxins are present.
It is bleach......I am pleased to hear about the ozone approach. When
you do the chems. in your own hut-tuv you can by safter water purifiers
and control the mix better. I had to sell mine.......for the
move. I never got sick from it and I have from public pools and
hot-tubs. I do not know what the answer it. Thanks for your response.

Dear Cynthia,
It has been a long time since I attended a meeting of the group, but I
still receive the emails.
You might wish to contact National Rehab Hospital in DC; I would
imagine they have a heated therapy pool.
202 877-1620. Located on Irving Street in Washington, DC right off of
North Capitol Street. They are near the Metro and could probably advise
you how you could arrange alternative transportation.
In the past, I was able to get a local Hotel to allow me to use their
pool for my therapy. I already had my own exercises, etc., and just
needed a place to do them. -Joan

Hi, Cynthia, I know what you mean about the "pool temp
conflict." I had
been enjoying the pool at the Springhill Rec center in McLean. There
were some great instructors and classes I was able to do. The temp is
around 80-81, and inially, that was OK. Then as my Raynuads started
kicking in, I was turning White from being cold. I even bought wet
suits...but even all that didn't help. I gave it up and I miss it.
Then I was told about the 2 large pools at George Mason
University - I
called and they were so nice and said their pools were kept at 88
degrees. AND I've never followed up. I believe 88 degrees would be good
for me, even though I can't tolerate "hot" showers, etc. If you're
interested in trying this pool, please call me and "kick my butt", I
need someone to go with on a regular schedule. Call George Mason
Rec/pool and see if they have would you need. -Penelope
Hi Penelope,
Thanks, I will call George Mason Univ. This sounds promising. Thanks, I
hope we can share again. Cynthia Ray

Hi,
Does the YMCA heat their pools? They should charge lower
rates than
average, and I know they offer sliding scales for financial
considerations?
Good luck,
