ABOUT THIS LIST
We are fortunate in DC, VA, and MD to have
doctors and
other health and legal practitioners familiar with and interested in
helping people with chronic fatigue syndrome
(CFS, CFIDS, M.E.), fibromyalgia (FM, FMS) and orthostatic
intolerance/dysautonomia. Recommendations for our list of practitioners
come mostly from our support group members and website users. The order
of practitioners listed within
each specialty is roughly based on the popularity, helpfulness reported
among the patients we
hear from. The quality and usefulness of this list depends largely on
people taking the time to make thoughtful suggestions. Send recommendations and updates to Elly Brosius at cfsupport-owner@yahoogroups.com.
Please provide names, specialties, address, websites, and what prompted
the recommendations. Professionals, please provide your special
interests and types of treatments offered that would be relevant to
people with CFS, FM, OI.
Selecting any professional is a very personal matter. Both the
client's and the professional's personalities
and styles matter as well as their preferences
in terms of approach, insurance
participation (including Medicare or
Medicaid), and many other factors. Some doctors are more suited for
initial
evaluation and diagnosis, some for disability documentation, some for
specific types of
testing or symptomatic treatments, some with addressing
underlying causes and
perpetuating factors, and some with alternative or complementary
approaches to healing. We all seek doctors and other
providers who have, at least,
a basic familiarity with our disorders, acknowledge them as the serious
and devastating illnesses that they truly are, are open to discussion
and working with the client/patient, and recognize that there are many
possible treatments for symptoms and approaches to healing that are
worth exploring. Keep seeking a team of partners to assist you
in caring for yourself.
Not only is it a big project to have
entered and be maintaining this list on our website, it is somewhat
controversial and a little unsatisfying to its users. Every doctor on
this list and everywhere, any professional in general for that matter,
has people who've had good and bad experiences with them. We don't
call this the "good doctor" list because there are never any
guarantees of a good experience, even when you go to "the best". We are
only offering a list of people who have shown knowledge or, interest in
working with CFS, FM, related conditions, very important service for
people with conditions that are so often dismissed. We offer some
comments about what the professional may be positively known for. We
have more in-depth discussion of experiences in meetings,
phone calls, and emails.
There are currently 11
different "web pages" just for the practitioners list, some of which
are each over 10 "printing pages" long. This
page/url is called the "Main Practitioners Page" and it lists the list
and table of specialites, this "read me," CFS/FM Specific Programs,
internists, family doctors, pediatric and adolescent specialists,
and how to find more health care providers.
We suggest you copy the only entries, sections you are
interested at anyone time into a new document and make a printout to
work from, to add your notes when calling to find about insurance, etc.
Check back monthly or so for changes. Let us know if you find
a phone number has been changed, a doctor has moved away, a link
doesn't work, or you find someone to add to the list.
The
links for specialites are likely to take you to other
pages/urls. Use your
browser back
button
or the links provided to move seemlessly among the Practitioner pages.
Some
practitioners
practice multiple disciplines and are not repeated in all the
relevant categories. Using the "search"
page within our website for
key words, names, cities, treatments etc, may help you find
what
you need easier than browsing the pages. Once you click on the page
that has a result, use the "Find" command of your browser to locate the
search term on the page. The site map page is
another view of what specialties we have and how they are
arranged.
Thank you for taking the time to read this
read me and ponder with us some of the complexities of offering a list such as this.

the energy to fight
Chronic Fatigue patients struggle for normal lives:
Brathwaite said she has given several of her patients the diagnosis of
chronic fatigue syndrome, but overall, she thinks the disease is
underestimated. ‘‘It’s a growing
problem,”
Brathwaite said. ‘‘I think it’s one of
the
underdiagnosed but more prevalent problems.” She said it is
difficult for doctors to pin down because there is not a specific set
of symptoms that define it. ‘‘It’s become
a diagnosis
of exclusion, but I think that’s changing,” she
said.
Brathwaite said patients and doctors have to take a multidisciplinary
approach to the illness and be flexible throughout treatment.
‘‘Things change,” she said.
‘‘One week,
exercise is working great. Next week, they can barely get out of
bed.”
