Scalini's La Piccola Italia (Italian Resturant).
This place is probably the most popular Italian restaurant in town at the moment, hence reservation is recommended for weekdays. Black truffle is used on their 'raw beef' and 'pasta with lobster'. We find their pizza excellent, home cooked soup and pasta are good, but lemon tart is a bit too sweet. Their pasta's portion is rather small, perhaps they expect an entree to follows as in Italy.

Villa Danieli.
The interior design of this restaurant is grand and impressive. On our first visit to this place for a dinner, we savoured crab cake and antipasto (cold dish) for starter; for main course, we ordered duck pappardelle and a seafood pasta; and finished off with tiramisu which is generously dosed with rum. On other occassions, we tried minestrone soup, thick tomato soup, beef fillet, salmon, panna cotta and find them above average. For a change, this hotel give 3 hours of free parking to patron.

Grappa
Another expensive Italian outfit operate by the management of Scalini. We ordered wild mushroom soup and salad as starter, pan roast duck, oven baked lamb, pasta and Risotto (Italain rice) for main course, tiramisu, grappamisu (tiramisu with grappa spirit) and straberry with ice cream for desserts. We find the soup lack of salt, both main course, dessert and ice cappuccino are excellent except the risotto which is below our expectation. We have yet to find a place that serve risotto to our expectation. This restaurant does not serve compliment cold water but Italian mineral water at RM12 per 500ml bottle.

A&V Lazar Chargrill Restaurant, KLCC
A branch of Melbourne, Australia restaurant serving aged steaks. The set menu start from RM30 to RM60 inclusive of a soup, main course (steak 100gm to 250gm, roast chicken or lamb cutlet), dessert and coffee, which is good value for money. We had their beef borth (made with mince beef, beaten egg and tomatoes, nice), pumpkin soup (creamy), roast chicken (tender and juicy), 250gm sirloin steak (tender, but less juicy than expected, may be because of improper temperature during shipment or grill's temperature too low), strawberry pancake and lemon pancakes. The steak is serve without sauce (which is proper) and can be improved further by serving on a warm/hot plate. Overall, this restaurant is a serious steak house one can find in KL.
Food Quality:

Price from RM30 per person.

Le Vogue, Renaissance Hotel.
Appetisers are impressive with a blend of Italian, Japanese, Malaysian and generally Meditteranean food. The fresh oysters and prawns will delight cold dish lovers - fresh and abundant. Salad bar had many types of vegetables with olive oil, tartar sauce, sesame seed oil dressing right down to the regular thousand island. Other highlights - the ox tongue, sashimi with wasabi, fried prawns, chicken cake (as opposed to fish cake) and a combination of local delights. For dessert, strawberry mousse and fresh strawberries are a must with fruits and lovely chocolate cakes with vanilla icing. Overall, a good place for buffet dinner esp. when the company is great. However, their high tea is expensive and choices is disappointing.
On our last visit in April '99, we find they still maintain an excellent selection of appetizers and desserts; however, the selection of main dishes has turned local and plain, and service is slow.
Food Quality: 1/2
Location: Jalan Ampang.
Open for lunch and dinner.
Price from RM70 per person.

Pacifica Grill, Mandarin Oriental Hotel
A new kid on the block in November 98 offering Californian ie non-traditional, contemporary cooking. We savoured pacifica starter (a collection of appetizers eg marinated salmon, olyster, soft shell crab, warm soba and fried prawn wrapped in potato noodle) at RM39, barramundi (seabass) at RM43, wood fire ribeye at RM42 and Dessert Variety Plate (banana fritter, chocolate mousse, cheese cake, fruit cocktail and pipeapple tart) at RM22. We find the appetizer interesting, dessert normal, portion larger than average, taste as expected (ie light with a twist), most impressed with their servers whom are well trained, knowledgeable, prompt, wearing all black uniform, neat hair style like air stewardess and pleasant and wish they can serve the main course on a warm plate.
During our last visit in August 2000, we had their business set lunch eg soft shell crab, soup, cod, steak and dessert. Although the fusion cooking cleverly combined western and eastern ingredients but we find the cooking unexceptional. They now serve the main course on warmed plate. Food Quality:1/2
Location: Mandarin Oriental Hotel, KLCC.
Phone: 03-380-8888.
Open for lunch and dinner.
Price from RM100 per person.

JW's California Grill.
The setting of this place is classy with an open kitchen. Their fried soft shell crab, salmon sushi (fried salmon roll), rib eyes and desserts are good (chocolate dream is very rich), but we find their pasta uninteresting. To save cost, they no longer serve complimentary Evian for cold water and one should not take the wine offer at the very beginning for free. We find this tactics too successful or too embarass not to make people to choose wine.
Food Quality: 1/2

Le Coq D'or
A very old restaurant housed in a mansion, the decor basically remain unchanged as in 1950's without aircond. The menu selection is better than many and price is value for money. Mississippi Slim's, Jalan Ampang
A new local set up (December 98) with an American concept serving BBQ dishes and blues music at night. Their BBQ dishes come with a selection of sauces from sweet (honey mustard) to Texas spicy. Coliseum Cafe & Hotel, Jalan TAR.
One of the oldest, if not the oldest western restaurant in town, established in 1921. Apart from the new coat of paint, the rest i.e. coat hanger, table cloth, all male servers remain time still as in 1950/60's. One of the rare western restaurant in town that still serve pork chop and gammon steak. Price is cheap, you can order a 3 course dinner for less than RM20 but don't expect constant smile by servers. Pasta Fresca Da Salvatore, Phileo Promenade.
This new (Aug 98) Italian restaurant serve a variety of freshly made pasta and allowed patron to combine varies pasta with different sauce (eg tomato based, white sauce and seafood). We had their mixed vegetable soup (a bit too salty), cold prawns (appetizer), veal with white wine sauce, veal with mushroom and marsala sauce (a better choice), tiramisu (a bit disappointed) and cream caramel for dessert. We find the food conventional but servers are friendly and price is reasonable for Italian chef.

Planet Hollywood, KL Plaza.
A theme restaurant decorated with surplus Hollywood props. The portion of food is huge (by local standard) but the price is higher and taste is lame. The service is less prompt than Hard Rock Cafe or TGI Friday. Instead, they place an attendant in the toilet expecting tips, which is cheap and should be discourage.
