Our Wedding
Mike and I were married on September 30, 2000. Because we were having so many guests from out-of-town, we chose to celebrate during the entire weekend. On Thursday, Mike's mom, uncle, and grandfather hosted a welcome reception at one of the guest hotels. Then, it was time for "Girls' Night Out". On Friday, while the guys were playing golf, I hosted a brunch for the bridesmaids and hostesses. I was also treated to a "Purple Passion" bridal shower--dancer included. Then it was off to the rehearsal dinner, which started and ran late. (Anyone planning a wedding with a lot of out of town guests--rent a bus to get them around. It will save a headache later!) The wedding took place in Northeastern Presbyterian Church in Washington, DC. The reception was held at the Blackburn Center Ballroom on the campus of Howard University. Despite a very busy night before--I stayed up all night with some bridesmaids and two of my linesisters (thanks Kiffany and Veronica!) working on programs and place cards; and Mike, well, his story is he and his friends played cards and board games...
--we made it to the chapel on time.
The colors we selected for our wedding were persimmon (a shade of orange) and grey. I know it sounds a little odd, but we wanted something different and it turned out to be beautiful!
We had a candlelight wedding, with bridesmaids carrying tealight candles within their bouquets. While we chose to have a more traditionally Western wedding, we did incorporate our heritage into the ceremony. Instead of lighting unity candles, we lit Kwanzaa candles, with 7 candles representing the Nguzo Saba, seven principles, of Kwanzaa. In addition we used Ghanain Adinkrah symbols on our invitation, rings, and cake. And when I walked down the aisle, an African drummer played!
