1. 4-H members who are carrying the 4-H dog project are eligible to participate in this show. Dogs must either be owned by the 4-H member or the member’s immediate family. They must be in the continual care of the 4-H member for the duration of the project. The date of ownership must be no later than May 1. Proof of ownership is the burden of the 4-H member and the member’s family.
2. Leasing a dog is not permitted.
3. Lessons, instruction and advice for the member are encouraged. As long as the member is present in the learning situation, and handles or trains the dog the majority of the time present, such assistance can include occasional handling or training by another person. Only the 4-H member can handle the dog at any type of training class on or after May 1.
4. On or after May 1 no one other than the 4-H member is permitted to show the 4-H project dog at any type of dog show, including fun matches.
5. 4-H members must be enrolled in the correct level of obedience, either Obedience Training--Beginning, Project No 206, or Obedience Training--Advanced, project No 207, to show. 4-H members must be enrolled in Grooming and Handling Dogs, Project No. 204, to show in 4-H grooming and handling classes at the Ohio State Fair. 4-H members are encouraged to take Dog Care, Project No. 200, as a complement to the other 4-H dog projects. In Grooming and Handling judging, questions asked during the interview will come from the Grooming and Handling project and the Dog Care project book.
6. All dogs exhibited must be six months of age by the date of the show. Proof of age is the burden of the 4-H member or member’s immediate family. Dogs not meeting this age requirement are not permitted to be shown.
7. 4-H members in respective activities and classes are expected to perform in those events and demonstrated those skills which are listed in the dog project books and on the various 4-H dog judging score sheets. The score sheets are found in the back of each project book. Any changes in the score sheets will be forwarded to the county 4-H professional.
8. The judge may dismiss from the ring any dog exhibiting unsafe or threatening behavior or any 4-H’er abusing the dog.
9. The Show official in charge will have the right and responsibility to order the removal from the grounds any dog exhibiting unsafe or threatening behavior or any 4-H member or other persons abusing the dog.
10. The Show official in charge will have the right and responsibility to order the removal from the grounds any person abusive to show personnel.
11. Only the 4-H dog, 4-H exhibitor, and show officials will be permitted in the ring while any class is being judged.
12. All dogs participating in the Fair must be currently licensed in the 4-H member’s county of residence. The 4-H member must bring a certificate of license and dog license tag to registration.
13. All dogs participating in the Fair must be immunized against distemper (CDV), adenovirus (CAV-1 & CAV-2) leptospirosis, parainfluenza (CPI), parvo virus (CPV), bordetella and rabies by a licensed, accredited veterinarian. All dogs under one year of age by the Fair Show date must be vaccinated against Coronavirus (CCV). [ For 2002 State Fair: Intranasal Bordtella can be given before August 2002. If a combination intranasal Bordetella and Parainfluenza vaccine is given, Parainfluenza can then also be given before August 2002.]
A. All 4-H’ers must have either an ODA Official Health Certificate or the Certificate of Vaccination for the Ohio 4-H Dog Show Project available for examination when registering at the State Fair.
B. The required vaccinations must been given after August 2001 and before August 1, 2002 by a licensed, accredited veterinarian. These are within the dates required for showing a dog at the State Fair. It is the exhibitor’s responsibility to make sure that the dates for the county vaccination requirements, as well as the dates for the state fair requirements, are met.
C. An ODA Official Health Certificate or Certificate of Vaccination for the Ohio 4-H Dog Show Project signed by a licensed accredited veterinarian is required. These certificates must include the name, breed and age of dog. Other certificates of vaccination, pet record cards or kennel records will not be accepted. When getting an ODA Health Certificate, or Certificate of Vaccination for the Ohio 4-H Dog Show Project, be certain the dates of the required vaccinations, including the rabies vaccination, are listed. Most dogs, unless it is their first time for a rabies vaccination, will receive or have received a three year vaccine. The veterinarian must circle which vaccination (1 yr. Or 3 yr.) was given and record the date it was given. Make certain certificates are signed by the veterinarian.
D. Upon 4-H’ers arriving at dog show area, Jr. Fair Board Member will check health certificates. Incomplete information or falsified information is grounds for dismissal.
14. Dogs must be kept on leash while on the fairgrounds, except when participating in the ring during judging. Exhibitors are totally responsible for their dogs while on the fairgrounds. Exhibitors are expected to clean up after their dogs. Dogs are not permitted outside the show ring area.
15. Females in season are not permitted to compete.
16. 4-H’ers must provide their own collar, leash, water dish, kennel and any equipment needed.
A. Obedience collars include well-fitting plain buckle or slip collars of an appropriate single length of leather, fabric or chain with two rings, one on each end. Fancy collars, or special training collars, or collars that are either too tight or so large that they hang down unreasonably in front of the dogs are not permitted. Nothing shall be hanging from the collars. Leashes may be of fabric or leather and should be 6 feet in length. Chain leashes are not acceptable.
B. Grooming and Handling collars include a chain or fabric slip collar, or martingale-type show lead. Nothing shall be hanging from the collars. Leashes may be of fabric or leather and long enough to allow for easy handling of the dog. Chain leashes are not acceptable.
C. Dumbbells must be made of one or more solid pieces of one of the heavy hardwoods, or of a rigid or semi-rigid, firm, nontoxic, non-wooden material, similar in size, shape, color, and weight to a wooden dumbbell. Metal dumbbells are not permitted. Dumbbells shall not be hallowed out. It may be unfinished, or coated with a clear finish, or painted white. It shall have no decorations or attachments, but may bear an inconspicuous mark for identification. The size of the dumbbell shall be proportionate to the size of the dog.
17. Handler’s and dog’s appearance: 4-H members should be neat and clean in appearance. They should not wear T-shirts, jackets or other apparel with slogans, 4-H club or dog club names, etc., in the show ring. They should wear clothing that is comfortable to handle in and appropriate for dog shows. Clothing should not distract, limit or hinder the judge’s view of the dog. For Grooming and Handling classes, it is recommended that girls wear skirts or dresses and boys were dress shirts, ties, and dress slacks. Blue jeans and shorts are not recommended. Dogs should be clean, well brushed and in good physical condition appropriate for the dog’s age. Purebred dogs do not have to be in regular show clip.
18. 4-H members showing their dogs at any Licensed or Member Obedience Trial or at a Sanctioned Match must show their dogs on or after May 1 at the same or higher level than they are showing in AKC, UKC, or other titling shows. Fun matches do not apply. Dogs who have completed their Companion Dog (C.D.) Title (or UKC, or other titling equivalents) prior to May l must show in Open B or Graduate Open A or B classes.
19. Dogs must be presented at the site of the exercises at least thirty minutes prior to the start of the show and remain until released by the Junior Fair Superintendent.
20. Entry cards should specify Division A or B by specific sub-class number. Division A. Exhibitor or dog HAS NOT shown in the class before. Division B. Exhibitor or dog previously entered in this class or prior show experience
21. In order to be eligible for a Best of Class award, a minimum qualifying score of 170 must be attained.
22. Judging of the Showmanship Classes will be based upon the relationship between the handler and the dog in the performance of simple exercises. Score sheets are available.
23. An exhibitor may enter a maximum of two obedience sub-classes with two different dogs, plus the appropriate showmanship class with one of these two dogs at the Shelby County Junior Fair.
CLASS B: DOG POSTER CONTEST
Sub-Classes:
1. Junior - 9-11 years old
2. Intermediate - 12-14 years old
3. Senior - 15-18 years old
Rules:
1. All ages as of January 1 of exhibit year.
2. Each poster must be made by the 4-H member enrolled in a dog project.
3. Exhibits must be delivered to the Shelby County Extension Office by 4:30 p.m. on July 1, prior to the fair.
4. Posters must be made using size 22" by 28" poster board, displayed horizontally. Poster board are not to be mounted on any type of stiff backing. Shadow boxes, overlays, or three dimensional posters are not permitted. Posters must either be laminated or covered with a thin plastic material.
5. Each poster must be clearly labeled in the loser right hand corner, in a space no larger than 3" by 5", with the exhibitor's name, county, and age as of January 1.
6. Posters will be judged on Educational Content (50 pts.), Neatness/ Appearance (30 pts.), and Originality (20 pts.).
7. Posters will be displayed with other 4-H poster and still exhibits.
8. Awards will be made during the Dog Obedience Show on Saturday Morning.
