Members teach their dogs basic obedience skills to help them
become better canine citizens. Their dogs learn to obey commands such as Heel, Sit,
Stay, Down, and Come. These commands are combined and built on as the 4-H member and
dog advance to higher levels.
Dog training is not a person working and a dog
working. It is a person and a dog working together as a team.
You must be calm and patient while training your dog. If you are in a
bad mood, your dog will be too. The leash acts like a information
channel between you an your dog. Your moods and emotions will travel
down the leash to your dog.
Correction and praise are important.
When your dog makes a mistake, correct him immediately while he can still
associate that correction with the mistake. Praise every achievement
immediately because your dog values your approval, and praise is his only
proof that he has that approval.
Most important, you need to practice
with your dog at home. Be consistent when you practice. Use the
same commands every time. Switching commands part way through training
can confuse the dog. Practice in 15-20 minute sessions twice a day.
