Upon your instructor's
command, "Halt", you do not repeat the command, but merely slow to a stop
and give the your dog's name and the command "Sit". The
instructor's command, "Sit you dog" is used during the long sit exercise.
There are many methods of training the
sit, but always begin with the dog on his leash, standing and facing
forward beside your left leg.
Method 1: Give your dog's name and
the command "Sit" as you gently pull straight up on the leash and push his
rump down with your left hand. Praise your dog
Method 2: Hold a small piece of
bait above the dog's head and slowly move it backwards, commanding dog's
name and "Sit" at the same time. As the dog watches the bait, he will
eventually have his head so far back that he will be forced to sit. When
the dog sits, praise him by giving the dog the bait.
Eventually, your dog will sit on command
without being pushed into position or having to use bait.
