VeloSapiens MTB Racing

going the distance
January 1999 (and also february, or at least most of it, since nothing interesting happened last month)

Cross season has finally ended. Now, just as the losers who don't race cross are hyperventilating about the all-important
"early bird" races, I can relax and start having some fun and exploring my new neighborhood. I'll be putting in some fat
miles to get ready for a season of ultra-endurance racing, so get ready for some epic ride reports. In fact, I've got one for you this month.

In recognition of the end of cross season, the name of this e'zine has reverted to VeloSapiens MTB Racing, which
changes absolutely nothing, so don't worry about it. Race and equipment news still concentrates heavily on cross, since
that's what I was doing until January 3rd, so don't get all nerped out if you're strictly an MTB-er. It'll get better, starting with the preliminary Norcal/Nevada off-road race schedule. I'll update this sched as I get information, but I'm too lazy to write
in-depth reports of the courses and stuff like I've done in the past.

I'm alternating between loving only my hardtail (a Fisher Supercaliber genesis), and being obsessed with a new dualie
(almost certainly a Santa Cruz Heckler SL). The terrain where I live now is much more hardtail tolerant than my old
haunts in the sierra foothills above Sacramento, but my friend Dan has a Heckler that weighs a bona-fide 23 lbs, so it's
pretty hard to not want one. Sigh.

Epic Ride The infamous solstice ride. To protect the guilty (but still cool), names and places have been fictionalized. Substance abuse (not by me), trail poaching (not by me), freezing cold, riding all dang day; it's all right here.
