Kuraby Skate Park
Opening Day

Date: 24 October 1999

So you have all been there and you know it is finished, but they had to have an opening day for it anyway... This is what happened:

Now this whole day was a bit of a strange one, because word had gone around that there was going to be a comp, or that there were going to be BIG things happening there, or even the Brisbane DCShoe Team was going to be skating there, but overall, without those things, it was just a normal day, a few more people, a couple of food vans and a band playing punk covers and bits of songs people asked them to play.

The south coast team turned up and had a bit of a roll, impressing most people, along with some locals from Skatebiz who really did skate like there was no tomorrow. Does anyone remember that little kid called "Tony" who used to skate at Paddington and then Ferny Grove a lot, the one who was always "borrowing" small change and other things... ? Well, you should see him skate now! He is all grown up and could whip the pants of most of the usual rippers out and about and he didn't even look like he was trying half the time!!!

There were a lot of people, most wanting to skate but all getting in each others way, so that was not so good - I saw a few heavy collisions happen between friends and strangers alike, there were that many people on the park.

After a while, the council people said a few words and tried to get most of the kids off so the skate teams could show their stuff, and generally it worked. See for yourself just a few pics of the day:

One of the coast crew, mellon over upturned bike

Tony (not so little) f/s tweak over big hip

Gareth feeble the whole main flat rail

Andrew (coast crew) pic taken late after just launching ally oop f/s off the quarter to the bank

The old skater of Underwood bowl, Jody getting a lot of height in a stale grab off the same quarter

Looking from the bowl end back towards the tents and vans:
The grind rail is in and there's a lot more concrete in the way of wider platforms and paths that run round the new garden areas.
