GUIDING SECTIONS IN THE UK | |||
---|---|---|---|
Section | Ages | Details | Picture |
Rainbows | Ages 5 to 7 years | The newest
branch of Guiding, started in 1987. The uniform has been changed recently
and now consists of a mix-and-match assortment including a raspberry-pink
and pale blue polo shirt with matching pink trousers. The Rainbow Trefoil,
once green, has been changed to pale blue and Rainbows now make a simple
Promise. |
|
Brownies | Ages 7 to 10 or 11 years | Brownies
were founded in 1914 and originally called Rosebuds. They still wear
the traditional brown, together with predominantly yellow tops in a
mix-and-match combination - see this
page for more detail. The Brownie Promise is essentially the same
as the Guide Promise. |
|
Guides | Ages 10 or 11 to around 14 years | Uniform
is still the traditional blue but as with the other sections, is a mix-and-match
of rugby shirt, polo shirt, teeshirtv or sweatshirt, plus a warm gilet
: for pictures see this
page. Jeans have recently been accepted as informal wear but navy
trousers, shorts or skirts are worn by most units on formal occasions.
Neckers are optional and vary in colour from unit to unit. They make
a Promise when they become enrolled as a full member of the Guides |
|
Rangers | Ages 14+ years | Guides
usually move on to the Senior Section at 14, although in theory they
could remain as Guides up to the age of 26! Senior Section - which consists
of Rangers, Young Leaders, young Guiders and other groups in the 14-26
age-range, wear a uniform which is similar to Guides but in turquoise
instead of Royal or Navy blue - see this
page - and Rangers wear their Promise badge, county badge etc, on
badge tabs similar to Guiders'. |
|
Guiders | Age range 18 to 65 | Guiders
are all volunteers and after a period of training they are issued a
Warrant to work with a particular pack or unit. Guiders' uniforms are
in the process of being "updated" and are now mix-and-match
and there is also a selection of "Guide wear" (as opposed
to uniform) - the full selection can be seen on the official GirlguidingUK
website. The colour of the stripes edging a Guider's badge tab denotes
the section she is working with - green for Rainbows, yellow for Brownies,
blue for Guides and Turquoise for Rangers - although this too is about
to change ... |
