Here is a list, and a few
photographs, of the birds we have observed either in or over our garden with an indication
of how common they are.
- Frequent = daily (can be seasonal).
- Regular = at least once per week (can
be seasonal).
- Occasional = at least once per month (can
be seasonal).
- Rare = at least once!
- Woodpigeon - frequent. Visits for food, usually 2 or 3 at a time.
- House Martin - frequent. Nests on the front
of the house.
- Robin - frequent. Nests in Ivy on the house
wall.
- Blackbird - frequent. Visits for food. Has
nested in Ceanothus shrub against house wall.
- Blue Tit - frequent. Very numerous. Has
nested in box.
- Great Tit - frequent. Very numerous.
Nesting in box.
- Carrion Crow - frequent. Visits for food.
Nesting in tree just outside boundary of garden.
- Starling - frequent. Very numerous, flocks
of up to 30+ sometimes feed on lawn.
- House Sparrow - frequent. Very
numerous.Nesting in box.
- Chaffinch - frequent. Numerous.
- Greenfinch - frequent. Very numerous.
- Goldfinch - frequent. Usually 2 to 4
feeding on Thistle seed.
- Siskin - frequent. Numerous in season.
- Collared Dove - regular. Usually a pair
visit for food.
- Sparrowhawk - regular. Captures small
birds. Seems more likely in wet weather.
- Great Spotted Woodpecker - regular. Visits
for peanuts.
- Swift - regular. Seen overhead, usually
with House Martins.
- Pied Wagtail - regular. Usually in pairs.
- Wren - regular. Usually single.
- Dunnock - regular. Usually single.
- Coal Tit - regular. Numerous but less than
Great and Blue Tits
- Skylark - occasional. Heard and seen
overhead. Not so common now that more land has ben developed.
- Swallow - occasional. Seen overhead with
Swifts and House Martins.
- Grey Wagtail - occasional. Sometimes a
pair.
- Song Thrush - occasional.
- Blackcap - occasional. Very distinctive
call.
- Chiffchaff - occasional. Very distinctive
call.
- Long-tailed Tit - occasional. Groups of up
to 6 feeding in Winter.
- Magpie - occasional.
- Bullfinch - occasional.
- Kestrel - occasional.
- Grey Heron - rare. Visited our pond once!
Sometimes flying over.
- Buzzard - rare. Seen flying high overhead.
- Lapwing - rare. Seen flying over. Flocks in
nearby fields.
- Black-headed Gull - rare. Visits for food.
- Cuckoo - rare. One pair seen and heard
flying over.
- Tawny Owl - rare. Heard close on several
nights.
- Goldcrest - rare.
- Jay - rare.
- Canada Goose - rare. Flying over.
