Here is a list, and a few photographs, of the birds we have observed either in or over our garden with an indication of how common they are.
  • Frequent = daily (can be seasonal).
  • Regular = at least once per week (can be seasonal).
  • Occasional = at least once per month (can be seasonal).
  • Rare = at least once!
  1. Woodpigeon - frequent. Visits for food, usually 2 or 3 at a time.

  2. House Martin - frequent. Nests on the front of the house.

  3. Robin - frequent. Nests in Ivy on the house wall.

  4. Blackbird - frequent. Visits for food. Has nested in Ceanothus shrub against house wall.
  5. Blue Tit - frequent. Very numerous. Has nested in box.

  6. Great Tit - frequent. Very numerous. Nesting in box.

  7. Carrion Crow - frequent. Visits for food. Nesting in tree just outside boundary of garden.

  8. Starling - frequent. Very numerous, flocks of up to 30+ sometimes feed on lawn.

  9. House Sparrow - frequent. Very numerous.Nesting in box.

  10. Chaffinch - frequent. Numerous.

  11. Greenfinch - frequent. Very numerous.
  12. Goldfinch - frequent. Usually 2 to 4 feeding on Thistle seed.

  13. Siskin - frequent. Numerous in season.
  14. Collared Dove - regular. Usually a pair visit for food.

  15. Sparrowhawk - regular. Captures small birds. Seems more likely in wet weather.
  16. Great Spotted Woodpecker - regular. Visits for peanuts.

  17. Swift - regular. Seen overhead, usually with House Martins.
  18. Pied Wagtail - regular. Usually in pairs.

  19. Wren - regular. Usually single.
  20. Dunnock - regular. Usually single.
  21. Coal Tit - regular. Numerous but less than Great and Blue Tits
  22. Skylark - occasional. Heard and seen overhead. Not so common now that more land has ben developed.
  23. Swallow - occasional. Seen overhead with Swifts and House Martins.
  24. Grey Wagtail - occasional. Sometimes a pair.
  25. Song Thrush - occasional.
  26. Blackcap - occasional. Very distinctive call.
  27. Chiffchaff - occasional. Very distinctive call.
  28. Long-tailed Tit - occasional. Groups of up to 6 feeding in Winter.
  29. Magpie - occasional.
  30. Bullfinch - occasional.
  31. Kestrel - occasional.
  32. Grey Heron - rare. Visited our pond once! Sometimes flying over.
  33. Buzzard - rare. Seen flying high overhead.
  34. Lapwing - rare. Seen flying over. Flocks in nearby fields.
  35. Black-headed Gull - rare. Visits for food.
  36. Cuckoo - rare. One pair seen and heard flying over.
  37. Tawny Owl - rare. Heard close on several nights.
  38. Goldcrest - rare.
  39. Jay - rare.
  40. Canada Goose - rare. Flying over.
