ATMEL
TO ENTER 32-BIT HIGH MEMORY DENSITY SMART CARD CHIP
MARKET
Atmel will deliver a
32-bit ARM based Smart Card chip design that includes a
high-speed Universal Serial Bus (USB) interface, high
capacity EEPROM, ROM and several different hardware
encryption engines among other features. Placing the
features of the FORTEZZA system on a Smart Card is much
more cost effective than the PCMCIA cards in use today.
No other Smart Card chip design integrates as many
functional features as the Forte' design. This chip is
the first to offer practical on-board bulk or stream
encryption.
The Atmel device
incorporates cryptographic engines including a fast-math
coprocessor for RSA and DSA function, Atmel's
proprietary DES engine and a newly developed SkipJack
engine.

LATTICE
RELEASES THE WORLD'S FASTEST 3.3-VOLT HIGH DENSITY
ISP(tm) PLDs
The ispLSI(r) 2000VE
family of true 3.3-volt SuperFAST devices deliver 4- to
6-ns pin-to-pin logic delays in 32- to 192-macrocell
in-system programmable ISP devices.Combined with
Lattice's ispLSI 5000V SuperWIDE devices, Lattice
delivers the broadest range of low-voltage ISP devices
ranging from 32 to 512 macrocells. The new ispLSI 2000VE
devices are based on the advanced architecture of
Lattice's recently released SuperFAST ispLSI 2000E CPLDs,
making them the world's fastest low-voltage programmable
logic devices. In combination with Lattice's new ispLSI
5000V SuperWIDE family of 3.3-volt devices, Lattice
provides the broadest range of advanced ISP low voltage
logic devices ranging from 32 to 512 macrocells. The
first two family members released are the 32-macrocell
ispLSI 2032VE featuring 4 ns/200 MHz (Tpd/Fmax)
performance and the 128-macrocell ispLSI 2128VE with its
5 ns /180 MHz speed. The ispLSI 2000VE family will
ultimately include five device densities with macrocell
counts of 32, 64, 96, 128 and 192 macrocells. The
largest device, the ispLSI 2192VE, will feature 6 ns Tpd
and 150MHz fmax performance.

ADVANCED
CHIP ARRAY AND FINE PITCH BGA PACKAGES INTRODUCED BY
LATTICE
Migration to smaller, advanced packaging means up to 70
percent board space savings, simple device handling and
stable footprint as die sizes continue to shrink.
The first Lattice product family to be available in
these rugged, space-saving packages is the new 3.3V
SuperFAST(tm) ispLSI 2000VE family also announced today.
The ispLSI 2032VE will be available in a 49 ball, 7mm x
7mm Chip Array BGA while the 2128VE will be available in
a 208 ball, 17mm x 17mm Fine Pitch BGA package.
Both of these advanced
device package options feature durable ball grid arrays
with ball pitches ranging from 0.8 to 1.0 millimeters.
The absence of fine metal leads projecting from the
package body makes handling and on-board programming
both easier and preferable for system manufacturers.
Substantial printed circuit board (PCB) space savings
are realized with the new packages which utilize up to
70 percent less space and feature thinner profiles down
to 1.4mm, requiring less board-to-board clearance. The
new packaging also reduces device weight by up to 90
percent compared to traditional PLCC and TQFP packaging,
making them more desirable for portable applications.

WORLD'S
FIRST 8-BIT RISC OTP MICROCONTROLLER WITH ON-CHIP
VOLTAGE REGULATOR, HIGH-VOLTAGE I/O DEBUTS.
8-bit RISC
microcontroller architecture as an ideal solution for
high-voltage system applications, including thousands of
appliances and other products powered by 9-volt and
12-volt batteries.
The PIC16HV540 has eight
high-voltage I/O ports whose inputs will accept voltages
of up to 15 volts and can drive outputs rail to rail up
to 15 volts to interface directly with sensors and
relays, for example. With a 3-volt and a 5-volt on-chip
voltage regulator, the PIC16HV540 eliminates the need
for expensive low-current regulators in many
applications powered from
9-volt or 12-volt
batteries or unregulated 6-volt, 9-volt or 12-volt AC
adapters.
A brownout detect,
power-on reset and device reset timer eliminates the
need for external circuitry for further cost reduction.
Four on-chip oscillator configurations include a
low-cost RC oscillator; standard crystal/resonator; and
power saving, low frequency crystal. A separate RC
oscillator is used for the sleep timer and the
programmable watchdog timer for reliable operation.
