Mortal Kombat

In the spring of the Common Year 603, a strange contest was held in the Arena of Greyhawk. Unarmed warriors came forward to do battle for a prize of gold. Weapons were forbidden and the fights were explicitly NOT to the death. Thus was born the first year of Oerth Fighter.

Four years have passed and the promoters of the first games have begun work on a new and expanded contest. These new games have an added premise: armed combat with non-magical weapons. Each contestant can enter the arena with three weapons, each non-magical but bearing a temporary enchantment to prevent them from administering a killing blow. Finally, armed fighting can follow the same course as unarmed combat...!

Contestants compete with (non-lethal) martial arts and/or weapons. Killing is forbidden. Spells are allowed so long as they do not a) cause more than one die of damage (one magic missile at a time!) b) do not defeat the purpose of physical combat (no sleep, charm, fear, etc) and c) do not prevent the audience from enjoying the spectacle (no darkenss, wall of fog, obscurement, etc). Of course, no magical items are allowed. Other than that, anything goes -- the more spectacular the better!

In these new games, however, the stakes are higher and the contestants far more skilled. Only those who have won one preliminary round are allowed to compete at all. The divisions are Novice (1st to 3rd), Skilled (4th to 6th), and Master (7th+). The battle is til the fall or surrender of one side or the other. The purse is 500 gold pieces for Novices, 1000gp for Skilled, and 2000gp for Master.

A few note about the leagues...

For the first round of combats, additional NPCs will be generated and used to avoid scheduling conflicts. After the first round is over, however, no new NPCs will be introduced.

To keep things fair, a fighter's initial combat will always be with someone of the same level (NPCs generated as needed). Second combats will always be against an of opponent within +/- 1 level. Third combats can be against anyone in the same league.

Likewise, to prevent one player from having his own characters battle each other, matches will be made to avoid this. There may be many NPCs created (and played by other players) to insure the first round is fine. If necessary, up to one "buy" is allowed when creating matches to avoid "same player" PCs. After that, however, it's too bad your characters are both too tough to find a fair fight elsewhere...
